Is this alienating content? Genuinely asking so I can learn. I had assumed this format was prevalent among leftists to make fun of right-wingers' "one joke," and not out of toxicity.
It probably didn't start out alienating but since its been overused it probably has started to feel that way.
I can see that. Didn't mean to make this point for my post. Just that the joke is used, say, often. You can wrap shit in any number of level of irony (I like at least two), but there are limits. Yelling a slur ironically is still just yelling a slur
I worked with a group of people for a handful of years. A bunch of different nationalities, and at one point we were bored enough that we just started using the most horrible slurs to refer to each other in casual conversation. For a week or two it seemed to be fine, until one day there was some huge argument. One of us actually had been feeling pretty hurt by the ironic abuse and had finally had enough and when asking that we all stop or at least leave them out of it had got some pretty caustic push back.
Shit got intense for a day or so until we managed to just agree that since it stopped being "fun" to just not do it anymore.
This is what I thought too, but am thinking it could be a micro aggression of sorts. Some trans comrades will have to help me out here. Definitely don't need to keep posting the joke
Honestly? Take it on a case by case basis, and be on the lookout for subtle transphobia
That's what I'm thinking too.
Its like the debate bro thing of asking for "sources" or "proof". By itself, its a reasonable request and it looks that way from the outside. But how much effort can another human being put into providing proof/sources to a nearly limitless number of requests before having to take a step back and thinking that maybe the demand is in bad faith. That the intent isn't to find clarification but to eat away at another persons time and emotional well being.
Agreed. I can also easily imagine we're twisting ourselves into knots, but that might be reactionary bs, too. Seems like a obvious joke, and the joke being there are more than two genders, but maybe not. :galaxy-brain: ?
yeah that's what I thought as well, but I think I'll avoid it from now on just to be safe
You see this is the shit that makes me realise i still have a long way to go as a leftist it never crossed my mind this meme was problematic until this moment
Good point, I edited mine to change the name, thanks for pointing it out comrade <3
I’m nonbinary and I’ve made “ah yes, the two genders” jokes
I always saw it as dunking on the cisnormative tendency to put everything in gender binaries for no reason. But yeah I can see it hitting differently if cis people start using it without that layer of irony.
