Don't forget that they actually, I kid you not, put in an in-game document that the parasite variant they put in the villagers only gave them the ability to jump higher

        Yep

Like, they could have had a nice consistent message that Tricell was taking advantage of a poor, impoverished nation to commit unspeakable cruelties

But nope, big racist adventure in a magic temple for half the game

It’s just a video game there’s nothing racist about it. If you’re seeing racist stuff that says more about you tbh

good. because if the developers didn't put the racism in, that's like not writing lines for the characters and telling us to 'use your imagination' or some shit. BITCH IF I WANTED THAT I'D BE PLAYING TABLETOP

I know it's sarcasm but I've literally been told that for pointing out problematic coding in media and other racist things, and it drives me up the fucking wall every time.

                Who said I was ashamed?

Every day I am awaked by my Razer DeathViper keyboard, mouse and monitor blaring in every color of God's creation

Every day I know that I have spent more money than all the Poor's who only buy consoles after they go on sale

Every day I am reminded that I am a Golden God at the peak of the mountain and the unwashed masses below cry for a chance to experience my grandeur and I look down and whisper "(the N-Word with a Hard-R)"

I hear you (nongendered sibling. lol, fa-wait, shit). I can't get off without a 4pool and a comment about what im doing to someone's mom. my 3090 greets me each morning with a loud "you paid too much for this, and you're using it to play a 22 year old game that would run 120fps on your phone", and I get a little wet. it is a kind of morning bliss.

There was a backlash when they first showed off trailers and gameplay footage which led Capcom to make the city-dwelling Majini more racially diverse, while leaving the literal spear-chucking, grass skirt wearing and grass hut dwelling tribesmen enemies intact

I mean, the town Majini consisted in large part of guys that looked like this or this .

What makes me think they were a late addition is that literally all of the special Majini types were all dark-skinned Africans

Uh oh, people are calling our game horribly racist, let's throw a couple of Arab, Hispanic and white looking guys into the crowds you're endlessly mowing down, problem solved!

            -Capcom, 2009

No discussion of Resident Evil 5's depiction of Africa and Africans is complete without mention of this particular unlockable outfit for Sheva

Edit: Did Sheva even exist in the initial gameplay reveal or was she added in response to the criticism?

Not that it absolves them in any way, but I believe RE5 was Capcom just being incredibly ignorant of the implications of the imagery and tropes they were employing, and that the backlash truly caught them off guard.

Like they'd had the same approach with Resident Evil 4, where they decided to to set the game in Europe and then proceeded to fill it with all the European things they could think of "Castles! Villages! Cathedrals! Monks! Napoleon!"

Unfortunately, most of the things you associate with Africa that have trickled down to you via news and pop culture tend to be... uhhh, not good (or true)

don't worry guys, wikipedia tells me that it's not racist because in one scene with a man dragging a screaming white woman, the man is "not obviously black" 😎

And yet, its still the best co-op third person shooter available. Its the only game I can play with my spouse without her getting a headache.

That's Resident Evil Revelations 2 and that opening was actually pretty funny because it was for a fake NGO dedicated to helping people recover from zombie outbreaks and shit

They also call themselves the "Unyielding Mop of Justice" which is just the most Lib thing I can imagine

Replaying 4 and then playing 5 for the first time was not a great way to experience the game. Even disregarding all the sacrifices in gameplay they made to fit online co-op, the tone and story were boring garbage, whereas Resident Evil 4 is absolute schlocky perfection, every single line of dialogue in that game is just deliciously and camera winkingly terrible in the right way

Wesker was fun, I guess, but not even DC Douglas hamming it up to the nines could save that game

To be fair, at that point in time they wouldn't have really been returning to survival horror as that's what all the games had been up to that point (disregarding spinoffs)

I'm just going to assume that version the game just straight up didn't work considering the two games it ended up spawning went in very different directions. RE7 was probably the best return to survival horror one could've asked for

I usually try to temper expectations on video games, especially "AAA" titles, but I'd be lying if I said I'm not starting to get hype for Village

Yeah, while I personally prefer the old school survival horror Resident Evils, I also really love Resident Evil 4, it's a great game in its own right. I really can't begrudge them for switching up the formula either- Resident Evil Zero really feels like they're scraping the very bottom of the barrel (Still an ok game though, and the HD rerelease looks great)

yeah if it didn't have multiplayer i would never have even touched it. but my friend got it for me during a steam sale many moons ago and while we had our fun with it in our own way it wasn't a good resident evil game and hardly just a good game period. I'm a huge sucker for legit co-op games so i'm already bias about it

The devs became aware of this while making the game and gave us the amazing cutscene where Chris punches a boulder to try and make amends.
