I worked at this new restaurant that was opening up, and the "training" was classroom-oriented. I thought they were an independent place, but nope, three restaurants, run by a Restaurant Group of Investors, and the corporate ethos was airtight. On one of the first days training in the restaurant, they called us all over to the line at a soda machine. Like 20 of us huddled around it. "What the fuck is this!?", the manager screeched, pointing at a couple ice cubes on the reservoir tray. You know, like when it melts it goes right down the drain. I must have had a look on my face because my training buddy gave me death stare and eyebrows. She continued, "Is everyone here a child that can't clean up after themselves? Does everyone enjoy living in filth?!" She took the rack off and chucked it in a sink. "This needs to be wiped down properly after every use, every time! Am I understood?!"

She stormed off and like 3/4 of the group jumped on the machine and wiped it the fuck down and started pointing fingers at each other. All the chemicals and reused towels and bullshit I guarantee was only gonna make people sicker from having drinks out of that machine.

I only lasted a month. Nothing makes you feel more dead inside than working at a place where the sociopathy of capitalism consumes everything.

I used to be a member of UFCW at one of the stores I worked at. They were kinda toothless sometimes, but they went to bat for you if the company tried to fire you for some bullshit. There was a really bad snowstorm one time, and a state of emergency was called because of it. Everything was shut down, hardly anyone was leaving their house if they could help it. A shitton of people called in, and the store manager was trying to issue points to all of us. Someone told the union rep, and the union got in touch with the store manager. No one got a point for not showing up that day. Breaks, how long they were, and what you could do on them was also something the union made a big deal over.

UFCW also let members use the union hall (can't remember if it was free of just for cheap) for hosting events and stuff, as well as hosted a christmas party there for all the members. They also get you a discounted rate on stuff like theme park tickets, and when I was a member, AT&T phone service.

They're not everything you'd hope they'd be, but it's miles better than ununionized retail.

A comrade on here told me to be wary of UFCW, my chapter seems decent though so maybe it's worth reaching out.

yes it was you. What's your stance on unions in general then, are they seemingly a dead end for socialist organizing?

Time to start thinking about the easiest ways to get away with getting a little extra out of the place without getting caught. It will make you feel a better when the shit on you over something stupid.

That’s fucking brutal mate, fuck them.

Hopefully better times are ahead. I guess in the mean time you could try and look for another job while you’re still employed, but I know how hard it is for me to do that, so I can’t blame ya either way
