I used to be a member of UFCW at one of the stores I worked at. They were kinda toothless sometimes, but they went to bat for you if the company tried to fire you for some bullshit. There was a really bad snowstorm one time, and a state of emergency was called because of it. Everything was shut down, hardly anyone was leaving their house if they could help it. A shitton of people called in, and the store manager was trying to issue points to all of us. Someone told the union rep, and the union got in touch with the store manager. No one got a point for not showing up that day. Breaks, how long they were, and what you could do on them was also something the union made a big deal over.
UFCW also let members use the union hall (can't remember if it was free of just for cheap) for hosting events and stuff, as well as hosted a christmas party there for all the members. They also get you a discounted rate on stuff like theme park tickets, and when I was a member, AT&T phone service.
They're not everything you'd hope they'd be, but it's miles better than ununionized retail.

A comrade on here told me to be wary of UFCW, my chapter seems decent though so maybe it's worth reaching out.

yes it was you. What's your stance on unions in general then, are they seemingly a dead end for socialist organizing?
