so i live in an area with transgender discrimination laws and have been discriminated against, on video, and i went to like 15 attorneys to get something done about it. it would have been in civil court and id have to pay 2k out of pocket to get things going. lol. all the attorneys agreed that it was a case of discrimination that would likely win. i just didnt have 2k to blow for a 'likely win'. and really even if i won, all i could get out of it was damages and the 2k back. so maybe i'd get 500 bucks out of the whole ordeal, and the doctor wouldnt have been fucked over at all. no hits to his license or insurance or anything. he could pay 2.5k off pretty fast. just the time effort alone means id just be better off plugging in extra hours at work and not stressing myself out about legal stuff.

so yeah, discrimination laws are meaningless. maybe a bit more useful if youre discriminated against at work so your damages will be higher. but in everyday stuff like going to doctors and stuff? lol. useless.

i dont see any of this as positive due to my lived experience. now, if they make surgeries cheaper or free or force every insurance company to cover it and all other trans positive procedures, i'll start to be happy. and i 9000% doubt theyll ever change how discrimination is dealt with in this country.

but hey, at least they arent threatening to make trans hrt illegal like some of trump's people were ranting about.

So sorry you dealt with this.

Related/unrelated, I had my wisdom teeth extracted by an intern (went as well as you expect), who butchered the situation and left me in the ER. Genuinely felt like I was dying. Bless those doctors though as they did fix me up without any money out of pocket (or ever which I'll always have guilt for). After the medical bills started coming in, "helpful friends" kept saying "this is just a lawsuit, you'll win in a heartbeat"

Which, cool! Except no lawyer would work with me without a hefty down payment (unsure if that's the term). So I was just fucked. For 7 years, I dodged phone calls and had shit credit.

The system sucks for poor people. And I sympathize so much with non-rich trans folks, for whom treatments/surgeries just aren't an option.

yeah i have nerve damage from one procedure and all the medical tests i'd need to legally prove i have nerve damage would exceed 5k and then i'd have to pay legal fees, stress out, hope i win the case, and then if i win all i'd get is nerve damage test costs+legal fees+the money to cover a new surgery to deal with nerve damage (WHICH INCLUDES YOUR INSURANCE :agony-consuming: )

whoever thought our legal system should function like a fucking gambling machine should be redacted

this. there's literally no point to these laws. because they're not "real" (beat up the poor, maintain exploitative social order and stratification of classes) laws, so the criminal system gives zero fucks about them.

the laws themselves are fine and good, not at all the issue. the issue is that the system by which the mechanism these laws are utilized with is held behind a paywall.

if that mechanism were available regardless of current capitalism-score, the laws would be far more real.

the fact that anti discrimination laws exist isnt adequate protection, but it is better than the absence of those laws, let alone laws codifying the discrimination as have previously existed

edit: not that discriminatory laws dont still exist, they do
