Explain like I'm a liberal: If the democrats say they need filibuster proof majority to pass the $2k checks, why don't they just make the republicans stand up and filibuster to prevent their constituents from getting the $2k that Trump demanded?
Please something more than "because the democrats are controlled opposition".
Everybody wants the ability to filibuster shit they don't like.
Nobody actually wants to be forced to stand there and actually talk for 48 hours straight to actually do it.
So they let each other just say they'll do it and they give up.
they don't even need to be present to filibuster which is the worst part. Its literally so easy to do it and dems continue to be shitbags. NPR went over how this works as part of a segment on its relation to slavery: https://www.npr.org/2021/01/12/956018064
So is the bill currently being filibustered or are they not even bothering? Or is there some bylaw that just short cuts it to be basically a veto?
Yeah my understanding is it’s essentially a veto. They just declare that they object, and since they COULD filibuster, everyone agrees that they did and it’s defeated. I think that just making them actually do it would be fun.
The idea of a filibuster can in no way be unique to western politics right?
I've seen how different democracies can work, lots of places have very long drawn out debates about topics and then eventually come to a final conclusion that they all vote for, but how many other places use the technique of "This blustering asshole won't shut the fuck up and let someone else talk" and actually think thats a good way of getting things done?Did manchin not block removal of the filibuster? So in effect this is exactly what’s happening?
