creator: yeah the thing I dedicate most of my waking hours to? the thing I love more than anything in the world? its just content! its simply media contained between ads, and nothing more! the entire universe revolves around ad revenue and this will never change! poggers!!
me:
Death to America
I was hooking up with someone at a party and a friend walked past and said "that's content" and so I never spoke to either of them again
I am right there with you. For the streamers I'd say at least have the courage to call yourself an entertainer. Content creator makes everything the same and it annoys me so much. A great TV show like the new AT: Content! Absolute swill like the Boba Fett show: Content! Those two things are not the fucking same and they're both TV, let alone also including movies or books into that mix. This guy who is funny and is really good at Guitar Hero: Content! V*ush: Content! Highly researched podcast about various US wars of aggression: Content! That NY Times show: Content! Shut up shut up shut the fuck up!
Shut the fuck up. Its so flattening and disheartening. If you actually think you're good at it, whatever it is you do, then you're better than that. Be a writer, be an entertainer, a musician, a streamer, a video producer or a podcaster or whatever. I can't imagine identifying as a "content creator," "I make slop" I fucking hope not.
The flattening of every kind of different thing to just "content" that you passively take in is soooooo fucking disheartening. We're witnessing the death of creative humanity, and the birth of the human machine
It's just a generic word that keeps them from boxing themselves in. It includes: streaming a game, talking to your audience, reacting to funny videos, prewritten skits, karaoke, making music, interviewing someone, touring an area, etc.
We all live under capitalism. For creators, it's easier to say "that's content" than "that will enable me to eat in the future".
If anything I appreciate the honesty.
I'm okay with people calling the slop content. New Star Wars TV show? Content. Netflix series about a C-List Marvel character? Content. Any sort of streamer? Content.
Anything that is created devoid of the profit motive is 'art', everything else is product to be sold.
I agree completely!
For example, Half-Life was an artfully executed product. The original Counter-Strike Mod was a work of Art.
So only amatuer art is art? The western art music canon is Schubert and some folk songs? The Sistine chapel and the Forbidden City and the Sphinx, all products
You can call whatever you want anything you like, especially art. I define 'Art' as something that is created only to exist and be appreciated. Once other concerns and interests get involved it stops being 'Art' and becomes a product with artistic characteristics.
I would consider most folk songs 'Art'.
Packing peanuts? content. Scree? content. mixed fill? content. Polyester batting? content.
