The registry is trash by any measure. Even if you somehow removed all of the people that shouldn't be on it, it's still punishing someone permanently for a crime instead of rehabilitating them for it.

It's also pretty useless because most people who commit child sex offences are usually not pedophiles (prior to the offending anyway), which is also why they have some of the lowest recidivism rates.

Eh, from what I’ve read at least some of this is due to the fact the state keeps such close tabs on sexual offenders, unlike with other crimes.

If we hawked shoplifters as much as we did molesters they would likely also have a low recidivism rate.

I would refer you to the chapter in this report - https://www.sentencingcouncil.vic.gov.au/sites/default/files/2019-08/Recidivism_of_Sex_Offenders_Research_Paper.doc

The vast majority of sex offenders are never accused, charged, prosecuted and convicted and are thus never subject to those sorts of controls

Okay but then how do we know what their rate of “recidivism” is if they’re never punished in the first place?

Also doesn't help that the laws using that registry are like "better keep the sickos away from any closed, empty park at night, but they're cool to be in a park near kids during the day"
