and you’ll end up killing a lot of innocent people, just like every other case that the death penalty is employed.

There was an episode of This American Life a few years ago about a young guy that basically realized he was attracted to children and didn't know what to do about it. He was terrified, and confessed it to his therapist who wasn't helpful and I think told his mother, which obviously didn't go well. But he eventually got some level of help, and now he runs a support group for people like him, with the understanding that the people in the group have never and will never act on their urges. Not sure what to do with that information, but it was an interesting story.

Isn't that stigma kind of the problem though?

If someone ran a support group for people with violent temper problems, or problem drinking, or any number of objectively bad things, that would not be a problem.

If you're trying to treat their condition and prevent them from acting on their urge to do the bad thing, why should that be shameful?

yeah imo it's a massive issue that "pedophile" and "child molester" are being used interchangably nowadays

i can imagine that there are plenty of people like the guy in question here, who would never act on these thoughts, but who would never tell a soul about their problems because being a pedophile is pretty much worse than being an actual murderer

Is he the guy who started the support message board for non-offenders? There were a ton of articles that came out about him a couple years ago.

Why the fuck it “killed immediately” an option here?

consider what possible events might lead someone to believe pedophiles deserve death

I'm not saying it's the correct option I'm just saying there are definitely understandable reasons why people would believe that should be what happens to them

idk it's still pretty easy to understand why they'd have that reaction, it's not rational but it makes sense

Like, okay, anyone is capable of understanding an impulse but they asked "why is that an option here" and you got smarmy. It's literally not an option. It's batshit. Oh, oh, someone here was grievously hurt by various unstable people, let's just have a discussion about death camps, on chapo, I'm only saying it's understandable

Make them live in adult only communities in the mean time

Somewhat unrelated but there was a big expose on how the registered sex offender database is not great in a lot of ways. I dunno if I can find the article but there was an example of a woman put on it for “sodomy” (Texas law) because she gave her 15 year old bf a blowjob at school when she was 16.

The registry is trash by any measure. Even if you somehow removed all of the people that shouldn't be on it, it's still punishing someone permanently for a crime instead of rehabilitating them for it.

It's also pretty useless because most people who commit child sex offences are usually not pedophiles (prior to the offending anyway), which is also why they have some of the lowest recidivism rates.

Also doesn't help that the laws using that registry are like "better keep the sickos away from any closed, empty park at night, but they're cool to be in a park near kids during the day"

Eh, from what I’ve read at least some of this is due to the fact the state keeps such close tabs on sexual offenders, unlike with other crimes.

If we hawked shoplifters as much as we did molesters they would likely also have a low recidivism rate.

I would refer you to the chapter in this report - https://www.sentencingcouncil.vic.gov.au/sites/default/files/2019-08/Recidivism_of_Sex_Offenders_Research_Paper.doc

The vast majority of sex offenders are never accused, charged, prosecuted and convicted and are thus never subject to those sorts of controls

Okay but then how do we know what their rate of “recidivism” is if they’re never punished in the first place?

POCD is a real thing and I linked some research on the effectiveness of therapy on sex offenders. Prisons are torture.

Should someone having pedophilic urges be considered automatically unsaveable and be killed the second it is found outbin any way?

Our current legal system doesn't kill them on sight, but it might as well. The only thing this level of harshness does is make them get really good at hiding it, and the only sensible and evidence-based way to deal with pedophiles is to create fully anonymous mental health resources that they can access which include behavioral therapy and chemical castration for the most severe cases.

afaik treatment to nuke their testosterone levels and kill their sex drive are effective for controlling their pedophilic urges

now if they mess with kids, yes, shoot them

im aware im legit on hormone blockers lol

they do two different things, they have a med which was formulated to kill sexual desires and the combine it with hormone reduction as an extra measure

I don't live in the US but my country often has a monthly "the poor pedos can't fuck kids" column in magazines/news papers. It pisses me off because having sex or watching porn isn't a right nor a human need.
