What is vocal fry and why are we fighting about it?
What is vocal fry
it's a thing where you drop your voice low and relax your vocal chords so your voice sounds kinda creaky,
think it's exclusively an american thingwhy are we fighting about it?
we're leftists
fair enough, only ever heard americans do it, so i assumed it was a thing over there
I've heard it in some english accent but it tends to be the posher sounding ones.
huh, i am really learning a lot about a thing i didn't know existed before today lol
i also didn’t know it was problematic / sexist when about women
a lot of the discourse around vocal fry and women originally cropped up in the earlier days of podcasts cuz you'd have these various panels of dudes and one woman and you'd have a bunch of comments and even cases of people directly messaging the women and being like "ugh i can't fucking STAND her voice." At least that's when I remember it being a big thing. Other than the "valley girl"="airhead" trope of the 80s
ah yeah I should have included radio as well. I remember hearing about it back then when I actually listened to npr (blech) sometimes.
The best I've been able to understand is its when a person speaking ends their sentences in a lower/gravely/cracking way. For some reason when the person speaking is perceived as a woman, it causes irrational anger in some listeners.
