Yeah that whole article was a 101 in how not to write about a trans person.
The wire is the one that dead named her, the person who wrote the article just included it at the top probably to make it easier to find. They at least use the correct pronouns unlike the wire.
Side question: When someone famous transitions and you're writing a story about it, should you only use their new name? Or do you kinda need to Dead name at least once so people know who you're talking about?
Also this disclaimer at the bottom makes me think it was at least considered before they published it:
