This is a double standard that annoys me. Anime is just animation from Japan. Judging it based on a few popular works is like looking at flag waving Hollywood bullshit and concluding that every live action film from the US is bad and uses the same shifty tropes.
I find this an uncomfortable echo of racism where POC are judged as a group but white people are afforded the privilege of being judged individually.
You're right, but I think its also important to remember that unless you speak Japanese and engage primarily with the Japanese anime community, what you perceive to be popular is filtered through the tastes of the western anime audience of neckbeards and weebs.
Look at the top grossing anime films in Japan and its almost all uncontroversial family flicks.
