Laying females will dig a brooding chamber, lay the eggs and then wrap themselves around their brood. They will wait until they hatch (as these have), then continue to guard them for their early life. The mother will spend months curled up like this and won't eat for all that time. These young centipedes are near the very end of that period and will soon be fully independent.
As much as I like centipedes, they're basically the only animal I can't bring myself to find cute. Really viscerally disgusting. And yet for some reason millipedes are just adorable.
Gross. I hate centipedes, they freak me out. I once stepped on one and something resembling the baby centipedes ran out from under my shoe like it was inside the bigger centipede or something. So freaky.
Violent video games like Dark Souls are teaching our children its OK to murder a mother centipede protecting its young. SMH
why, did you find them in your house? if so, it could indicate other insects are in your home which the centipedes eat, so you should be grateful for free pest control
I love spiders and pretty much all crawling things. But centipedes evoke sheer horror in my lizard brain.
One time I was in Thailand, and this enormous centipede came ambling down the street. I was taking a picture and this Thai dude zoomed up on a moped, hopped off, grabbed a broomstick and killed it. He then scolded me because apparently it was very dangerous.
ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
Centipedes are great at dealing with cockroach infestations apparently. I have lots of millipedes where I live, but millipedes are herbivores so they don't eat other insects.
