As someone who lives in California, I find that the lib hype about California shows their true colors.
Moving to California radicalized me — not cuz the state is “radical left” but cuz it’s so incredibly fucked by neoliberalism. Imagine getting off the free way to home for the first time seeing a dozen of homeless people living in camps, with a solar panel in the middle where they can charge their phones. Imagine passing by 4 different RVs and 50 different people sleeping on streets on the walk to grocery.
Any lib who’d see this on a daily basis whilst still being a lib is an absolute sociopath. And that’s California for you.

This should be put on a plaque. Had the same effect on me after I moved.
Fair points. I suppose the intent of my post is more to the Ezra Klein hypocrisy than to amplify the baseball crank.
Those positives you mention are positives, but fit in the neoliberal world view. So while it may be far superior to a reactionary hell’scape like Missouri, none of the positives you mention would be out of place at r/neoliberal. So when Ezra Klein and his ilk put California on a pedestal, they are doing so because of precisely the worldview that causes the problems.
The material success of the wealthiest in California has come on the backs of insane inequality, homelessness, working class having ridiculous commutes, a racially stratified society, etc.
This isn’t to pick on California. For many it is a great place to live. But liberals would trade those things you mention for absolute misery for most Americans
:amber-snacking:
Let the hate flow through you! I like struggle sessions.
Your points are valid. Being lgbt in a multiple conservative states, I get it lol
I feel like one reason why California “sucks so much” is because they’re one of the only states where the homeless even think, righty or wrongly, they have a chance of surviving via the government. With the weather and culture too it has a lot of people come there seeking refuge.
Nah he's right California is a shithole.
It's just slightly less of a shithole in some ways. Congrats to california I guess.
Don’t apologize comrade. I do have amber brain to some degree
The point of this piece isn't There Oughta Be A Law. It's that even in a very blue state, the aesthetic of progressivism often runs way ahead of the willingness to allow the change needed to achieve progressive priorities and ideals.
very cool ezra
I think we need to stop giving credit for owning the libs. The libs are so ownable that it's not impressive.
It’s true, but someone’s gotta keep an eye on those freaks like Ezra Klein because I don’t want to
Fuck the neoliberal goons who run California
take it from someone who lives here
