Blood Bowl - it's Warhammer orcs and elves and shit playing "football" that's mostly about beating the shit out of each other, it's a cool turn-based strategy/luck game of careful positioning and risk management. Blood Bowl 2 is the prettiest version with probably the most players, there's also the FUMBBL league which I haven't tried, it has a free minimalistic client

I know this genre might be a bit of a slim pickings category since EA owns the rights to almost every major sporting franchise, but this is probably still worth doing. That being said, FIFA is probably the easiest and most fun franchise to pick up if you don't play sports games.

late for this and not really applicable but Rocket League. as close as you'll get to playing football (soccer) in a videogame.

My personal favourite sports game is SSX 3. Great graphics for the time, and amazing gameplay and soundtrack. Best arcade snowboarding game by far. The trick system as well as the "SUPER UBER" is just soo satisfying. I still emulate it on my phone with a controller today.

For a soccer game, FIFA 14 and the FIFA 14 world cup edition is peak FIFA in my opinion. Gameplay and menus were perfect. Any FIFA after FIFA 16 is pure rubbish because of the switch to the frostbite engine. Let's just say a game engine designed around a first person shooter with a destructible environment does not work well in a soccer/football game.

Completely forgot about SSX. Always preferred them to Tony Hawk, despite not having the staying power.

Yeah some of those tracks on SSX 3 are wild. Can pick up some insane combos and get into the "Uber zone" within 10 seconds and stay there throughout the whole run.

There are some really great, realistic sports games out there but my favorite will always be NBA Jam Tournament Edition. Great gameplay, fun codes, 90s basketball, iconic announcer... NBA Jam rules.
