“I dissuade Party members from putting down people who do not understand. Even people who are unenlightened and seemingly bourgeois should be answered in a polite way. Things should be explained to them as fully as possible. I was turned off by a person who did not want to talk to me because I was not important enough. Maurice just wanted to preach to the converted, who already agreed with him. I try to be cordial, because that way you win people over. You cannot win them over by drawing the line of demarcation, saying you are on this side and I am on the other; that shows a lack of consciousness. After the Black Panther Party was formed, I nearly fell into this error. I could not understand why people were blind to what I saw so clearly. Then I realized that their understanding had to be developed.”

― Huey P. Newton :huey-wut:

Huey Newton, born on this day in 1942, was a Marxist-Leninist revolutionary who, along with fellow Merritt College student Bobby Seale, co-founded the Black Panther Party (‪1966 - 1982‬). Together with Seale, Newton created a ten-point program which laid out guidelines for how the African-American community could achieve liberation. In the 1960s, under Newton's leadership, the Black Panther Party founded over 60 community support programs (renamed survival programs in 1971) including food banks, medical clinics, HIV support groups, sickle cell anemia tests, prison busing for families of inmates, legal advice seminars, clothing banks, housing co-ops, and their own ambulance service.

The most famous of these programs was the Free Breakfast for Children program which fed thousands of impoverished children daily during the early 1970s. Newton also co-founded the Black Panther newspaper service which became one of America's most widely distributed African-American newspapers. In 1967, he was involved in a shootout which led to the death of the police officer John Frey. Although arrested for the murder of Frey, the charges were eventually dismissed.

In 1970, after his release from prison, Newton received an invitation to visit the People's Republic of China. Newton made the trip in late September 1971 with fellow Panthers, Elaine Brown and Robert Bay, and stayed for 10 days. At every Chinese airport he landed in, Newton was greeted by thousands of people waving copies of the "Little Red Book" and displaying signs that said "we support the Black Panther Party, down with US imperialism" or "we support the American people but the Nixon imperialist regime must be overthrown."

By mid-decade, Newton faced more criminal charges when he was accused of murdering a 17-year-old sex worker and assaulting a tailor. To avoid prosecution, he fled to Cuba in 1974, but returned to the U.S. three years later. The murder case was eventually dismissed after two trials ended with deadlocked juries, while the tailor refused to testify in court in relation to assault charges.

Despite graduating from high school not knowing how to read, he taught himself literacy by reading Plato's Republic and earned a Ph.D. in social philosophy from the University of California at Santa Cruz's History of Consciousness program in 1980. In 1989, he was murdered in Oakland, California by Tyrone Robinson, a member of the Black Guerrilla Family.

Revolutionary suicide does not mean that I and my comrades have a death wish; it means just the opposite. We have such a strong desire to live with hope and human dignity that existence without them is impossible. When reactionary forces crush us, we must move against these forces, even at the risk of death. We will have to be driven out with a stick.”

Gotta love how it barely took a month for shit to hit the fan from when Larry Ellison, Elon Musk, etc decided to move to Austin and declare Texas "the new Silicon Valley--regulations are for losers". Electricity costs $9,000 per megawatt right now because they have a stupid fucking "market" system for electricity and, like most things in Texas governance, it's a poorly conceived, poorly implemented mess.

Edit: to be clear, I mean literally $9k.

And in like 3 weeks, 90% of Texans will have written this off as a weird one-off that no one could have foreseen and continue on believing whatever they believed before. Texas will add some new cold weather laws, and everyone will go "well, I guess that's solved then. it's not like there's some broader lesson here or anything."

This happened to me in my last long term relationship too. Fuckin sucks. Took me like 2 years to really get over it - but I did, and I know you will too. It'll probably get worse at first, but that will plateau and then start improving.

Make sure to take care of yourself. Be gentle, but try to make sure you eat/exercise normally.

Yeah, I get it. I lost something like 10 lbs in the weeks following my break up, but it wasn't healthy. I couldn't keep up my work outs and ended up losing muscle/fitness too.

Its a shit show, but I'm rooting for ya. Be well comrade.

I had another great idea when chapo went down. So my shirts have a pocket on them. I've decided to fill that pocket with candy. This frees up my hands for other things while giving me easy access to my candy and at any given time.

Lets say I'm reading theory, well for every page I read I get one m&m. This keeps me reading because I want more candy. One hand is holding my kindle while the other is free to defend me if I ever get attacked. I've never been attacked before so I'm overdue for it and can defend myself now.

All it took was one of the mods spilling clamato on the chapo internet box last night. Good job @Beatnik for helping birth this theory.

Everyone do this so we can have more leftist here. We shall fill all our pockets with candy!!! The mods can't stop us if we all do it. And I guess we could finally read some theory to or something.

I know I've read some theory because of this place. Stuff like :leslie-feinberg: work was super cool and now reading Whipping girl. It's one thing to read it but another to share it with other people that makes it fun. Reading these works makes it idk easier to vibe with others on this site because you got a feeling of where they are coming from. And when you vibing in sync it makes this place even more fun. Hope this makes sense.

I do like the pointless struggle sessions though. We should have one on whether we should ban outside cats as a bit or something. Feel like these mock fights could alleviate some tension before we head into the more heated discussions.

First we start off with what even is a white person. On second thought don't wanna start right now since I need to sleep in a bit. Maybe tomorrow after I eat I'll be ready to internet fight.

I take issue on the American part. We need to open up the scope, can't forget about terf island for instance. We really don't want to be American centric now.

a cool thing is about autism is that if you don't react to a thing that upsets you people assume it doesn't bother you but then if you finally crack they're like "whoa wtf why are you so upset, just go back to being chill"

motherfucker that "chillness" was me repressing my own needs for months because I'm terrified of breaking social cues, now just fucking give me the paltry grains of respect I'm asking for.

This is something my spouse and I struggle with sometimes. We're both on the spectrum, and we'll be surprised by the other person's reactions sometimes, especially because we're all that much more likely to miss the subtle cues that may precede it. We're trying to make an active effort to explicitly call things out earlier when we start to get over-stimulated.

I know how tough that can be. Solidarity, comrade.

When my cat sits next to me on the bed or the couch, he keeps touching his paw to my hand like he's trying to hold my hand. Unfortunately I am already wedded so there can be nothing between us, must let him down easy :lenin-cat:

Holy shit I never realized that those famous words uttered by Fred Hampton,

we don’t care what anybody says, whether they have guns, badges, or uniforms; whenever they step outside the bounds of legality and into the bounds of illegality, we’ll blow their brains out if they’re bothering the people.

was literally his defense testimony when he was on trial for killing a pig. Absolutely incredible

I'm making a pie crust from scratch for the first time ever. Wish me luck, comrades.

It's successfully (I hope) formed into disks of pastry and wrapped and in the fridge for at least 1-2 hours. It's too late to go back.
