    You did the right thing.

    It sucks that we live in a world where doing the right thing is often punished (probably why the woman didn't want the police involved, she's afraid of what might happen/ has been gaslighted by the sound of it).

    You tried to protect someone, never question if you did the right thing, he could have killed her, for all you know you could have saved her life.

    You did what you could and whatever happens as a consequence (if anything) is absolutely not your fault.
