I've always wanted to dabble in amateur reporting myself and it seems like we're pretty well positioned to publish fully uncensored leftist content. The recent post on Belarus and just the energy I feel from the server in general leads me to feel like we have a responsibility to elevate ourselves beyond just shitposting and providing support to our comrades as an online space.
E.G. there's a lot of stuff going on regarding homeless advocacy where I am but doxing myself has always been a concern.
The dev team is way ahead of you and are already working on the Proletarian Press Bulletin
Proletarian Press Bulletin
Real Trot hours, who is up?
Oh shit that's dope. I was just thinking there should be a centralized place for effort posts and stuff to show liberals.
Oh god dammit. That works too I guess...
There’s nothing stopping you from using this as a platform for journalism, but it’s not the best choice for one. It’s better as a sounding board for new ideas, and further dissemination and examination of existing ones.
Firstly, this place doesn’t have a whole lot of reach. It works for discussing specific ideas among leftists, but it’s not great at disseminating new ideas widely.
Secondly, this place isn’t presentable. It’s a forum. Original research published here doesn’t get its own article page for easy reference. Formatting is very limited. You’d honestly be better putting fresh content onto a blog.
That’s not to say there’s no value to this place. It’s good for discussing things. It’s good for preparing collations of ideas for use as copypasta in other places, or for practice explaining things.
Thanks and I agree for the most part but so long as the format allows easy linking to sources I don't really see much of a difference. Not to mention that driving traffic here can only be a positive.
Credibility is a huge part of what makes for successful reporting that gets widely shared. Sure, some Reddit posts eventually become news stories, but they only reach a larger audience after being picked up by an institutional source or twitter account with a huge following. You'd be better off publishing off-site and linking here, I'd imagine.
Turns out I've actually got a twitter account that has more than a few big followers. I've been sort of trying to put the pieces in place to launch something like this for a while now.
Edit: And I'm not trying to profit off this shit I'm cool being a grocery clerk I just want to help the revolution I'm doing all this just because I want to instill some fucking meaning to my life.
Nice! Who would you consider good indie journalists that are relatively early in their career, or what are your favorite media platforms that give young journalists a shot? Also, would you actively turn down paying work, or is remuneration for your labor not a priority right now?
Garrison Davis is one for sure. He's been out there getting fucked up by Portland police and doing top notch protest coverage. Edit: He's at most early twenties and out there getting tear gassed every night to bring us news of what's actually happening in Portland for the last two months.
As for getting paid I wouldn't turn down a paycheck, no but I'm also not looking to make a career our of it. I just want to use what few skills I have to help boost leftist voices in whatever way possible.
It would probably also help to get Will Meneker’s blessing on using the name “Chapo”
Lol
I am baffled why that name was picked in the first place.
Chapo News Room.
For real though those are all good ideas. We need to build parallel power structures and that means not just feeding and providing clothes and shelter to those in need but creating more alternative news sources and media outlets. There can never be too many.
Not to mention links to "Chapo.Chat" don't set off anti-communist alarm bells (yet).
As much as we like to think hardly anyone would ever recognize this site for its actual origins.
Edit: in conclusion we must start posting insightful OC in the c/news threa.
social media needs content in order to keep up engagement.
Heads are telling me outrage rules as the despot strategy of interwebz "" engagement" " and hopefully a new thread about this will pop up before I get the requisite upbears to do it myself
If any of these motherfuckers are serious about revolution that's what this has to become.
Edit: Surprise motherfuckers the anarchists were the vanguard all along.
By this I mean the people most inclined to direct action (see anarchists and bootleggers teaming up to make and distribute hand sanitizer) and the first to organize outside capitalist power structures IN THE US SPECIFICALLY have been anarchists. This is not to disparage or discredit MLs and I am a huge proponent of left unity this is just an observation of the current state of left politics from a US perspective.
Too late.
Edit: sorry there's too many good takes here I don't make the rules.
I'd love to collab in any way i can, but pleeeaaaseeee drop the chapo. Don't make them look good.
I think it's a great idea for anyone who entertains the idea of independent journalism to give it a shot! So much can be achieved simply by interviewing those in your community: advocates, members of marginalized communities, neighbors, and even political adversaries.
doxing myself has always been a concern
This is a challenge though. Anonymous bylines usually just don't play as well with readers (unless you're the Economist lol).
Yeah I gave an anonymous radio interview to a local station a month or so ago when the protests first kicked off. And yeah fuck The Economist.
Edit: just to reiterate this is a serious post and I am thinking of doing some actual reporting/interviews with locals and possibly posting here.
I think it would be hard when you're just getting started to simultaneously be the subject of journalism (giving anonymous interviews to other orgs) and producing journalism yourself. I would look to other young indie journalists who have successfully built an audience from twitter/substack/blogging/etc
I've got a couple articles waiting in the wings because a deal went through with a local cooperative newspaper, where they got scared of amazon because I was slagging them off too hard.
I'm also working on putting together a podcast with a coworker because that seems like all any of us extremely online leftists can do these days.
Ahem excuse me sir I'm sincere posting, you have no jurisdiction here.
No one is going to take this place seriously as long as it’s deep throating CCP imperialism propaganda.
This place is to be taken extremely seriously sir, thank you very much.
You mean do I only ever post about chinese ethnic cleansing? No, I’m slipping lately and talking about other stuff too. I should probably spend more time pointing out that every corporate interest in America being on China’s side is probably not a good thing, but the interface here sucks dick so I don’t bother
