    "Fun" fact about Poland and literacy: The poles the nazis intended to use as slave labourers, rather than being straight up murdered, were only to receive enough schooling to be able to read simple instructions. Everything above that level was considered wasteful and dangerous by the nazis.

    Slavers in the Americas had similar ideas and illiteracy was deliberately being used as a tool to suppress enslaved people and prevent them from resisting.
