I don't get the show, so correct me if I'm totally wrong, but perhaps people just want to fantasize about being part of a community and having fulfilling relationships, but capitalism realism has so broken their brains that they can only find it realistic or relatable if it's set at work.

Sounds reasonable enough. I probably did this with Star Trek as a kid.
