we got bad actors that actually know how to exploit stuff now? we've reached the big time.
i think its amazing that people have dedicated thousands of hours to try to kill this site when all you had to do was upload a jpeg
Not really, someone just posted a public download link to the image that crashes the site and bad actors probably downloaded it and spammed the site with it. They didn't actually figure out anything most probably
it's just that if the problem is getting fixed, it's not really a good idea to put light on the problem in the meantime.
No, we have to put the limelight on the issue to create an incentive for the market to fix the issus.
Please don't tell me the story that some rando with an enormous corrupted photo of a Korean soldier wasn't a hilarious accident but rather a malicious attack
It's not even that complicated, OP posted a public download link to the image because their account was too young to DM and people probably download it and spammed the site with it. Like they didn't even figure out the bug most likely, just downloaded the source image. The mods have removed that link thankfully
Hmm, the architecture of how images are handled is a bit more complex, the images are handled by a containerized image handler, so changes have to be made upstream into that, the library isnt called directly from the backend.
Opening up that image in irfanview causes my ram usage to go up by 2gb lmao
We salute our dev team who sacrifice their time to give us a place to post :sankara-salute:
"BLIT" (acronym of Berryman Logical Image Technique) is a science fiction short story by the British writer David Langford. It has a setting where highly dangerous types of images called "basilisks" have been discovered; these images contain patterns within them that exploit flaws in the structure of the human mind to produce a lethal reaction, effectively "crashing" the mind the way a computer program crashes when given data that it fails to process.
To be clear: Internal hosting is shut off. External image links still work.
Is this the thing that crashed the image hosting?

Also about the bad actors thing, maybe it's just me being grumpy but I've noticed it in the comments and posts as well. I think I've reported more stuff today than I have in the past 6 months. o7 to our mods, admins and developers, keep up the good work.
site machine broke

2014 was 7 years ago :doomjak:
Lol did someone figure out a way to insert data into uploaded images that fucked up the image hoster or does the hoster just not handle corrupted jpgs well.
Basically someone was trying to create a 750 megapixel image of a North Korean soldier to upload to the website and it got corrupted during the creation. They uploaded it to the site anyway to see what would happen. It crashed the site and they made a post about it. In the post later, they made a public comment with the download link to the source image (now removed). Bad actors probably downloaded it and spammed the site with it. They most likely figured out very little.

Oof. Handling corrupted files is a giant pain in the ass for any program.
Doesn't help that someone posted a download link to said image in a public comment
Not blaming you or anyone, just think it will be funny once all is said and done lol
