It's because the monarchy has been hiding behind their ceremonial status for all these years. They are just a family of state subsidized celebrity caviar eaters at this point, so it makes sense that only their own personal ugliness can cause this.

They only have the appearance of ceremonial status. They wield far more actual political power than people realise, intervening on political matters that affect their estates in secret regularly, along with holding secret powers we genuinely don't know about.

Should the Queen die in the next year or two, I think there’s a bigger chance than ever that the family will be brought into existential question. I doubt it will actually go, as folks will be desperate to cling to the past as the country’s institutions and constituent nations disintegrate post-Brexit.

The U.K. is going to be in for a very wild ride over the next 10 years, with the potential impending death of:

    • The Queen
    • David Attenborough (one of those universally revered parts of the establishment that make people feel good)
    • The NHS (the privatization accelerator will be pressed once Covid is stablized)
    • The BBC (to be sold to Murdoch et al)
    • Scottish independence, Irish unification, Welsh independence becoming a genuine question

I fear the sense of shock and embarrassment from those is going to lead to some very dark times there for ordinary people there.

When Barbados left the Commonwealth there were chuds completely unironically suggesting we should nuke them as collective punishment so yeah, you're probably right, the gammons are not gonna handle the UK collapsing well at all. Fun times!

IMO the perfect lib way to get ahead of that is to pass a law that the UK becomes a republic... upon the Queen's death. It avoids the struggles that would follow her death and Charles's ascension, while not just booting out the Queen herself (because people like her for some reason) and gives the country time to prepare for the changes. For libs it would be like going out on a high note.

Brits: I WANT TO FUCK THE QUEEN SHE'S MY WAIFU I WANT TO BE INSIDE HER SO BADLY

The Queen's grandkid and their spouse: Uh, that queen may actually be kinda racist? Sort of?

Brits: Wait what, the monarch leading the remains of a genocidal colonial empire built on the blood and sweat of PoC may be kinda racist? :surprised-pika:

Bespoke: gather the monarchy and their children up for a firing squad like the Romanovs so that future libs have something to focus on in a hundred years rather than the billions that died during the climate wars

    Farewell the jewel crown

    Farewell the velvet gown

Watch it all come tumbling down

    Goodbye to the crown

I think the saying "It's easier to imagine the end of the world than to imagine the end of capitalism" in Britain is applicable to the monarchy as well.

Meghan McCain joined in on this discourse. Meghan McCain objecting to talentless hacks getting handed down wealth, power, and a platform because of who their parents were is hilarious to me.

This will never happen, brits are extremely proud of the institution, even the ones who outwardly grumble about the spectacle.

Not sure, never really met any young people that were positive about the monarchy, plenty that don't care either way and a few that want it abolished, obviously there are some that are pro but I think most people below 40 probably won't ever care so their times numbered to a few decades at this point I think.

Of course, I am sure you are right. I was just being flippant, I have only been to britain once and I think my perspective was tainted by the circumstances of my visit.
