The result was, and continues to be, one of the worst environmental disasters on the planet. Contamination of soil, groundwater, and surface streams has caused local indigenous and campesino people to suffer a wave of mouth, stomach, and uterine cancer as well as birth defects and spontaneous miscarriages. Chevron has never cleaned up the mess it inherited, and its oil wastes continue to poison the rainforest ecosystem.

I didn't even know about this...

Donziger represented over 30,000 farmers and Indigenous people from Ecuador in a case against Chevron related to environmental damage and health effects caused by oil drilling. The Ecuadorian courts awarded the plaintiffs $9.5 billion in damages, which led Chevron to withdraw its assets from Ecuador and launch legal action against Donziger in the US. US courts have sided with Chevron and Donziger has been under house arrest since August 2019 awaiting trial on charges of criminal contempt of court.

I can't say it surprises me that it is happening, but I am surprised by how brazen it is. The fuck is this??

So far, thankfully for him, most of it was during Covid. So the real punishment could be what happens with this trial.

The bribery charges the prosecutor is speaking of all hinged on a single witness. The witness has since recanted.

The judge only gave him 3 minutes, and it isn't strictly material to the case. The judge may have resented his bringing it up.

      Googling chevron Ecuador

      Chevron Ecuador

Chevron has never operated in Ecuador. Texaco Petroleum (TexPet), which became a subsidiary of Chevron in 2001, was a minority partner in an oil-production consortium in Ecuador along with the state-owned oil company, Petroecuador, from 1964 to 1992.

Lol. Dafuq is this? Did Kamala Harris write it?

I think it went well. Hopefully Donziger will be freed. Keep in mind the fight to help the Indigenous Ecuadorians will still be ongoing after today. Chevron still claims that the Ecuadorian court was corrupt and will continue to ignore the billions they owe.

I am sure Donziger will keep up the good fight. It is possible he may face further persecution for future activities.
