Americans should not be identifying themselves according to what European country their ancestors supposedly came from (unless they arrived within the last couple of generations) because they have no real connection to the culture and it is, therefore, extremely cringe.

Almost all of the newspapers in different languages of European immigrants have been gone for the better part of a century. If you don't speak the language, and aren't in contact with your relatives in the "home country", and if your ethnic community doesn't really have barriers, you're just American.
Ethnicities aren't primordial axioms; they emerge as people live together. After 150-400 years of living together, depending on how you're measuring, the ethnogenesis of "American" is certainly complete.
I'm not sure if I want to go so far as to say that it's completely okay to be American though.
