    There’s no place in the American electoral system for a third party. The way to go would be a progressive version of the Tea Party. Primary safe incumbents in downballot offices until you have enough support to make demands. They don’t need to take over the party, they just need enough offices to deny the Democrats the ability to pass legislation if they all vote as a block. There’s a difference of 34 seats right now between Democrats and Republicans in Congress. If you had one in ten Democrat seats, you could pretty much clog the system, assuming Republicans continue to be openly and consistently obstructionist (which is never a bad bet, imo).

    It’s basically the equivalent of starting a third party. The trick would be making sure that the block actually voted as a block, regardless of external pressure, but that would be true of a third party, as well, in a lot of ways.
