I don't like the binary USSR good or bad discussion. It is to simplified.

The USSR was a vast country that went through several distinct periods of development and whose leaders had different political goals and priorities. Reducing it to a question of good or bad prevents us from appreciating their achievements as well as from learning from their mistakes.

They did lot of amazing things, like defeating fascism, developing a wartorn feudal third world country to a superpower within a generation and winning the space race. But lots of things were not examples to be repeated. Many Soviet consumer goods were of low quality, the system was perceived as bureaucratic and oppressive by many citizens and ultimately the USSR failed to defend itself against the capitalist forces that brought about its end.
