  • Something weird happened a few months with Green and Pleasant, when the reddit algorithm decided G&P is a general interest UK sub and not a lefty space, so now every thread consists of about 20% lost right wingers who don't even realise they are brigading a lefty space and are genuinely confused when they get piled on for their stupid positions.

Its quite strange - not something I've seen happen with any other subreddit.

I've never heard of horchata being made from rice, but a quick research and lo and behold, in the Americas it is made from rice instead of nuts? that's crazy to me - sounds kind of like smooth rice pudding or something. I'm sure its still good though

The most racist thing here is assuming vegans are white, and assuming that veganism is something white people enforce on non-white people. In America, at least, people of colour are much more likely to be vegan than white people are.

In addition, the history of vegetarianism and veganism is only really a couple of hundred years old in Europe, while elsewhere in the big, wide world it has traditions that stretch back thousands of years.

Starting with telling people of color what they “should” be eating after crackers stole all their land and brought them over on slave ships and put human beings into chattel slavery for 400 years.

You could make the exact same argument for anything, if you define that the thing in question is a 'white' thing. For example: "Socialists telling people of colour what they should believe in after crackers stole their land and brought them over on slave ships". Its a non sequitur.

Idk, I just heard of this today, but I'm vegan and I think its a pretty clever bit because it seems to be very successful at riling chuds up enough that they start contorting themselves to try and justify farming dogs to avoid criticising farming pigs, cows, etc

I don't think it has to have any more importance or meaning in persuading people than just baiting morons into showing themselves to be morons, which is always funny

EDIT: This sinophobic beauty from r/antivegan for example:

I love how they think that the “are you okay with people eating dogs” point is such a checkmate. Bitch of course I’m okay with it, just humanely harvest the dogs. The reason I’m against eating dogs in Chinese markets is because of the abusive conditions they’re put through.

Also reminder that China could have simply grabbed and intergrated HK straight up into the mainland after the colonial “lease” to the UK was over. And they had every right too.

That's not exactly true; the 'New Territories' of Hong Kong were on a 99 year lease, so for those lands (comprising nearly half the population of HK and the vast majority of the territory) China had the right to take them back in 1997, however for the remainder of Hong Kong - (consisting of Hong Kong island and Kowloon Peninsula), these territories were leased in perpetuity, so China didn't have a legal basis to go in and take them.

This is why mediation was needed - splitting the New Territories from Kowloon and Hong Kong Island would split the city's population nearly 50-50 into two, which would present huge logistic issues for both sides and wreck the economy of both parts, and would've left Britain, China, and the Hong Kongers unhappy.

I'm not going to comment on whether either side is keeping or breaking the agreement that was made, just pointing out that it wasn't some act of kindness or magnanimity that brought China to the negotiating table - the only other way they could've seized central Hong Kong in 1997 was through war.

  • Was the boycott of Apartheid South Africa "liberal"? Was the bus boycott "liberal"? Or the BDS campaign? Going vegan is pretty much just boycotting animal products, and boycotts have been very effective in the past.

when literally the same number of animals will die whether you eat meat or not lol

This is very dumb, boycotting the meat industry obviously affects how many animals are slaughtered. For example, here's data from the UK showing a 10% decrease in meat consumption between 2013 and 2017, which is believed to have been caused by widespread adoption of veganism beginning at around that time (and this figure is believed to have dropped further since 2017).

In the UK, the average person consumes 85kg of meat a year; the total meat consumption of the country is 5.5 billion kg of meat per year, so a 10% reduction in meat production means that 552 million kg less meat is being produced.

Would you seriously contend that half a billion fewer kilos of meat being produced has zero effect on the number of animals being slaughtered?

  • instead of just saying that they start engaging in measuring the skulls of animals bc they don’t talk to anyone else but other vegans

Except it's you who is doing that. Veganism simply says avoidall animal exploitation as much as is possible; this applies to everything from cows to mice to bees. There is no "skull measuring"or hierarchy of life in veganism.

You're the one whose worldview relies on using a pair of calipers to justify why you'll torture Bessie the Cow to death to sate your lardass lusts, while simultaneously seeing murdering Rover the Dog or Free Willy as evil, murderous acts.

I resent Wales being lumped in with Cornwall.

    Wales > Ireland > Scotland > Cornwall

Wales is the only Celtic nation that is actually culturally Celtic in any meaningful way, and deserves its place at the top of the coolness hierarchy
