An infamous figure in the black metal scene

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varg_Vikernes

He's a gigantic neo-pagan nazi weirdo with absurdly baffling beliefs even for a nazi, initially got famous for church arson and murdering another black metal musician in the 90s

Good thing black metal isn't known for having many Nazis besides that guy side-eye-1 side-eye-2

You've got it all wrong, those bands just love traditional Slavic symbols

Varg is the ur-black metal nazi though. Though I guess at least the murder he committed wasn't a hate crime but some dumb beef with another nerd

I've mentioned it before but Varg is such a dumbass he got his wife to film himself trying to swim across a river while wearing a chain mail hauberk and he almost drowned. He is a clown man without the makeup.

It got deleted when he lost his youtube channel for being too much of a fascist for youtube. Which is saying something.

Edit: it might still be out there, it was on his "Thulian Perspective" channel.

Funny thing about that Aarseth guy he murdered, he called himself a communist because he believed all the western propaganda about how evil commies are lol, there's pics of him from either his apartment or his office with portraits of Mao and (iirc) Tito on the wall

Yeah, he thought Communism's bigger bodycount* made it way more evil than the Nazis and thus cooler michael-laugh

I also seem to remember reading he said something similarly bizarre about gay sex

I clearly remember he once said that he only did anal with his girlfriend because vaginal intercourse was symbolic of the creation of life lmao

Edit: A lot of the quotes from these guys back then was just them trolling the media though. Some dipshit "journalist" from a tabloid shows up at your door and asks you if it's true that you sleep in a used coffin or whatever, you go "sure, why not"

I think he also had his own record store and intentionally kept it so 🤘🤘🤘666_DARK_666🤘🤘🤘 customers couldn't even browse the records

It's the most infuriating thing about the genre. It's one of the only genres of music that helps my mental health because the anger and fierce riffs calm me down and then I find out one of the band members is a nazi. And suddenly I'm right back to being mad and uncomfortable.

Any other BM bands w/o nazi ties? I've listened to Naglfar and Panopticon and they're both pretty solid, but don't know much else outside the early Norwegian BM scene

Immortal was never involved in any nastiness AFAIK(please don't anyone break my heart here) ...if you don't otherwise mind them essentially being the Manowar of black metal in terms of silly cheese

The only time I've ever seen any of the Immortal guys mention Varg was guitarist/vocalist Abbath looking straight at the camera and going "Fuck Varg!" so they're probably in the clear lol. Also, love the cheese.

Enslaved have clearly stated that they want nothing to do with fascism in the scene, which is especially cool seeing as how their stuff is so heavily based on old norse myths

Havukruunu / Mare Cognitum / Spectral Lore / Yellow Eyes / Wolves in the Throne Room

There are some small labels like Syrup Moose Records that try to push lefty bands

If you don't mind digging through underground stuff go look at releases with the "rabm" tag on bandcamp

That reminded me of r/rabm, that I used plenty to keep track of the nazis and get some good recommendations. To my surprise, there's a 2 years old Lemmy community for it: !rabm@lemmy.ml

It's in dire need of activity, but it exists.

That's why I'm into EBM/Industrial. Aggressive, rhythmic, usually pissed off sounding and the likelihood of bad politics is comparatively low (even though there are some suspicious band names).

Unfortunately, there's not a lot of it, it being basically a fad of the years 1989-1991.
