Yes. If it thinks you're stealing, it'll play it back for the attendant. Most of the time they'll open it and clear it before the video even plays because they don't get paid enough to care, but you can theoretically be nabbed for it.
The ones at my local Giant are incredibly pushy. The scales must be badly calibrated because it constantly screams at you to put the item in the bagging area
I must be becoming a boomer because I wrestle with the self checks too beeping at me for incorrectly placing the item.
The only thing self checkout is good for is ringing up everything from the bulk bins with the code for peanuts.

All the self checkouts I know can't recognize when there's a bag in the bagging area.
