I must be becoming a boomer because I wrestle with the self checks too beeping at me for incorrectly placing the item.
The only thing self checkout is good for is ringing up everything from the bulk bins with the code for peanuts.
Do the cameras recognize when it's not the correct item in the bag?
Yes. If it thinks you're stealing, it'll play it back for the attendant. Most of the time they'll open it and clear it before the video even plays because they don't get paid enough to care, but you can theoretically be nabbed for it.
This is what should be illegal. Don't want to pay for cashiers? Okay but then deal with the fallout of people just taking shit.
The ones at my local Giant are incredibly pushy. The scales must be badly calibrated because it constantly screams at you to put the item in the bagging area
All the self checkouts I know can't recognize when there's a bag in the bagging area.

Kroger has the most obnoxious self checkout system; I think it's the motion capture software being mad at my hand movements
sometimes when I scan my rewards card barcode that I have on my phone it instantly locks up 🙃
If they've only got self checkout open you better believe I'm buying organic vegetables and ringing them up as regular. You want that extra money you better spend it on cashier wages.

Keep the headphones in and ignore the alarm just like the few remaining employees do.
There is one grocery chain here that has good self checkout machines that don't complain and moan about weight mismatches, and there is another chain that has god awful self checkout machines that are very sensitive about weight, placing items in the bagging area, etc. I really wonder how much if any money the latter type saves.
I'm a little ashamed I did chuckle at 'point of assail.' The humor is bad but that's some decent wordplay.
