Interesting things happening with me at work lately concerning voice and gender presentation
story
So I'm a teacher.
Recently, in my classes, I for some reason got the guts to start practicing some of my voice training techniques in front of my class. I tried to keep my pitch the same while lowering the weight of my voice. It comes out very clear and even, so it kind of just sounds like teacher voice anyway. It was also more of a challenge to maintain lightness while projecting to a whole class. Much more helpful than mumbling stuff out alone in my apartment. I think it went well.
Coincidentally, this week I'm also doing some work that requires me to record my voice. I heard my voice played back and was like, "oh my god, I need to do more voice training" lol. I was just doing my regular voice, though. Someone here recommended that people record themselves while they're voice training. My advice? DO IT. It's uncomfortable, but I guarantee you it will change your perspective on how you sound and how you're improving.
I've also been testing the waters just imagining what it would be like if I were doing my job while presenting femme. It's interesting the brainworms that come up. My general feeling is, "wow, it would be really hard to be authoritative if I were femme. These students wouldn't take me seriously." I had to reprimand some students the other day, and it's so much easier when I can just be stern and masculine and scare them lol.
Anyway, it's just a window into what women have always had to deal with in the workplace despite the fact most teachers are women.
