      shooting into a mirror flips the image (assuming youre using rear camera) which makes it more appealing to you, as that is what you see. on the flipside others don't see you that way. the zoom in makes you hold the phone further away so it helps to eliminate the fisheye effect

      The front camera on most phones are much worse than the rear ones, and have a wide lens that can makes your face look kinda odd and enlarge whatever is in the center of the photo, which is often your nose.

      If you try taking one photo of your face with the front camera, then flip your phone around and use the rear one in the exact same position and angle, you'll probably notice you look a lot more like how you're used to seeing yourself in the mirror in the rear camera photo. Taking a photo of your mirror image also helps because you can keep the camera further away which eliminates a lot of the distortion effect that being close to the camera lens can create.
