Just wanted to share a thread for those who don't regularly venture out of the bear site. Can't cross-post since it's defederated. It's small but has some numbers about community counts, active users, etc and links to more info from https://lemmyverse.net/. Thought it was notable that Hexbear shows up no matter how you sort it.

OP image is community count sorted by active users in the last month.

Half the thread is "I have never interacted with Hexbear but they are literally the worst instance and I'm so surprised they exist"

The funniest part of that is all the people who think we're a bunch of uneducated kids who base our opinions on nothing, while fully admitting they have never interacted with us at all. Yes I see. Tell me more about making opinions on something you know nothing about bean-think

yeah the accusations that we were born after 9/11 just do not hit, all reddit-styled forums (especially the fediverse) are skewed toward olds

CTH is famously an elder millennial fanbase too. Average Chapo fan age is certainly higher than the average Reddit user age

I remember the thread where we just posted Bush-era image macros. It's just the continuation of Something Awful - Twitter - here.

I think the average HB user could speak conversational 1337sp34k if asked by historians trying to restore that dead language.

"Finally, someone that can finally translate this ancient document!"

It's just the ASCII art header for a gamefaqs guide from 1998.

"...and this, what does this mean? Our best scholars are unable to decipher it. Is it a code? a hieroglyph? Or a heretofore unknown related language? We have deciphered the text below as referring to "soi", is it about a bountiful harvest? A precursor to the Soy "Jack"?"

"Hmm. Yes, I believe this is what the people at the time refer to as a "Roflcopter". The caption "my roflcopter goes soi soi soi" does not refer to the soy plant nor the soyjack, but an onomatopoeia of a helicopter, a now defunct method of air travel with an abnormally high fatality rate"

I didn't post on r/CTH but my political journey / "radicalisation" was based on joining the workforce in the aftermath of the 2008 crash and then losing my safety net just before covid and the employment hellscape that came after.

I've been through enough to know a decent amount of luck and privilege was the only thing keeping me off the streets, and I get a similar vibe from a LOT of the posters here. The idea this place is full of teenagers is absurd.

I think most r/CTH users originally came from Twitter and they made a reddit account specifically for that subreddit. The culture of the subreddit was so different than the rest of reddit and it was evident this was older Something Awful types or enlightened 4chaners who had seen the error of their ways. There was blatant contempt for the "Reddiquette" and frequent brigades, and in general just contempt for all of the rest of Reddit.

That's why they quickly became the new SJW, the new SRS of the site. The gamers and gooners and nu atheists and software engineers and funkopop collectors and the_donald users and the r/politics users all were able to unite against a common scapegoat, and the feeling was mutual. There was always the feeling a ban was inevitable, and the mods of the subreddit had to keep being recycled being they were being pressured hard by the admins to delete tons of stuff, and they didn't want to and kept getting ousted. Then the next group would come in and pretend to for a bit then stop lmao.

In the vein of "only a Chinese or Russian person could be disagreeing with me right now about China or Russia" comes the new "only one of those dang kids today could be disagreeing with me right now about how kids today suck."

My favorite thing is them believing that everyone from Russia or China must have hated it there, and while there are some expats that are like that, most of the ones I've met (outside of Indians) really like or miss their country of origin. I'm not saying they are perfect (far from it) but they seem like no more totalitarian hellholes than the U.S.

Also you are talking to ex pats and emigrants who are predisposed to disliking their home country.

All the Chinese people who really like China stay there and don’t go on the English speaking internet to argue

TBH I know a number that sneak through the firewall to troll westerners, they're pretty cool. Some don't want to visit here tho cause the firewall blocks this domain. Maybe if someone reopens chapo chat and puts a Chinese interface on it we'd get a lot like that

I know some trans Chinese commies too

This would be pretty easy I think, seeing as we already have next.hexbear.net

BEGONE CHILD! Let the old gays, trans-femmes and occasional cis white guys post in peace!

Sidenote; Also zoomers are literally starting to graduate college rn, so still young but not like, 14 year old teenager young, the real big thing is that we, unlike .world or .trek, are not, for the most part, tech people. And if we are, we are usually tech-pessimists. Creates a huge posting culture difference.

I would assume most Hexbears are at least in their mid 20s, if not early 30s. I know we even have some older folks. Hexbear is many things, but a community of edgy teens is not one of them.

Not that I have an account on Hexbear, but I spend a lot of time here (and enjoy it). I'm mid-forties, college degree, well-traveled (mostly North America, Europe and Asia). I have only grown more frustrated with liberals the older I get.

Consider making an account here. I used to be on .ml, found myself spending most of my time here, and made an account. You can split time, or just stay here.

Personally, I enjoy my time here much more.

I've considered it. I don't really want to have multiple accounts, and for better or for worse, .ml is still more broadly federated.

That's fair! I do consider the benefits of not having constant struggle sessions like on .ml to outweigh a decrease in content. If the best content and comrades are federated with Hexbear, and the worst aren't, the good posts we lose are worth the tradeoff for me.

Helps keep your mind healthier too, I'm sure, not having to see the kind of garbage posted every 10 minutes on .world.

Yep, my thoughts exactly. Do what you want to, of course, but just want to put it out there that I was in your shoes and don't regret jumping. I still check in on .ml every once in a while, but I don't spend all my time fighting libs in the trenches anymore.
