Learning about the Bengal Famine (and Churchill's response to it) has been depressingly enlightening.

The really depressing one to me is the Bihar Famine. It was the only time the colonial administration actually took steps to alleviate a famine, and the Governor was criticized for wasting resources (and got 6-10 million killed the next famine he was governor for).
Every one of the famines could have been handled that way, tens of millions died because they weren't.
