You ever find it weird how the supposed sanctity of human life is overwritten by the need for personal comfort for 1st worlders
That's whataboutism, which means I don't have to think about this any further.
Whataboutism is a fucking plague
"Let's contextualize this situation--"
"NO! IN THIS THOUGHT EXPERIMENT ONLY COMMUNISM EXISTS!"
"... Cool I guess"
When the communist commits "whataboutism", they are asking about the double standard applied to socialist historic leaders.
Learning about the Bengal Famine (and Churchill's response to it) has been depressingly enlightening.
The really depressing one to me is the Bihar Famine. It was the only time the colonial administration actually took steps to alleviate a famine, and the Governor was criticized for wasting resources (and got 6-10 million killed the next famine he was governor for).
Every one of the famines could have been handled that way, tens of millions died because they weren't.
Don't even have to go that far back, the American machine is killing people today.
True, but the point is that the British Empire killed and enslaved and brutalized millions upon millions for four hundred years with detached at best, sadistic at worst efficiency. The United States is still behind (not for lack of trying).
When Kruchev made his speach denouncing Stalin Kenya was an open air prison
Obviously nonsense, but when confronted with the most reactionary of these people...
Stalin & Meow killed millions!!!
Good. :stalin-approval:
The west is actively and perpetually committing genocides and if you focus your energy on the POSSIBILITY that its enemies maybe are doing something similar instead of fighting the genocides being done at or from home, fuck offff.
I'll never forgive John Oliver for teaching the libs about whababoutism.
America: "You are the most evil country in existence because you do X. You must be destroyed."
Other country: "But you do X even more."
America: "Don't change the subject!"
Whataboutism was specifically coined to denote the USSR pointing to the treatment of African-Americans, as if it wasn't a valid criticism for a nation positing itself as the "Leader of the Free World".
It was also originally called "...and you lynch black people", but Americans changed it to "whataboutism" because you can't exactly recover from a burn like that.
"Stalin and Mao killed millions!" "If so, what about the British Empire?" "tHaT's WhAtAbOuTiSm!"
