Apparently she has a pretty hardcore fanbase, but who is it that's a fan of her? Why did she get so popular so fast? I don't exactly hate the songs I've heard, but I also am not seeing what resonates with (some) people so much

She's new and she has an aesthetic that's not particularly common among the pop industry right now so a lot of younger people are seeing this kind of thing for the first time. This just the sadboy style in hip hop spreading to pop.

Now that you mention it, xxxtentacion had this same effect so that makes a bit of sense

Yes X was still kind of abrasive so he people who listen to mostly pop probably weren't attracted to the style outside some of his more popular songs

Wouldn't fault anyone for asking this same question about Death Grips or anything. I guess what I'm also wondering is what the aesthetic actually is? Is there a stereotypical Billie Eilish fan yet, or is that still something that's coming together?

I would describe it as like emo pop but with all the punk influences of emo kind of filtered out. Emo pop isn't new but most of the artists are from a decade ago and still has the punk influences there so zoomers aren't gonna be fully aware of all the different takes on the style.

Billie Eilish's "stereotypical fans" (for lack of a better term) would be zoomer white girls, they probably like the bright colored hair and lazy looking style she has but aren't allowed to do those things because they still have to go to school and all that kind of stuff. I had purple hair for a while and I would get compliments all the time from people who look super normie, so I think a lot of people wish they could be a little crazier in what they wear and stuff but are restricted by their jobs and stuff so they see people like Billie Eilish and think "man that looks cool, I wish I could be like that but society won't let me."

She has family who works in the music industry apparently / maybe family with connections, im too lazy to check, but also her music is moody and pretty and unoffensive. weirdly my boyfriends retired older white suburban mom really likes her. despite her moody trendy fashion and seemingly menacing beats / song lyrics shes like taylor swift but less highstrung // or like a gen z lorde but also she sounds like lana del rey. shes kinda doing the basic white girl music thing but seems to be more in the mainstream

personally billie fits my tastes more than lorde/lana/swift because she seems to use more hip hop beats/ EDM (in a genuine way, not in a i knew you were trouble way) and i like that she collabs/ is kind of a two piece act with her brother, a dj. i think all of this just makes her stuff more exciting. but her non #1 singles generally sound like they could be in lana's norman fucking rockwell

she definitely also benefited from the youtube algorithm (im sure everyone has had one of those vanity fair interviews where billie is interviewed over a 3 year time span, marking her fame rise and transition into adulthood, on the timeline at some point) and im sure other social media algorithms as well, im just only really familiar with youtube

i do wish billie would speak up more though when singing. its hard to hear sometimes but it seems like shes doing it as aesthetic so

but basically, old people can grasp billie via her sad mellow style and young people can grasp her too, so it makes sense shes won grammys and also gets #1s

it's this.. mostly. Don't get me wrong she and her brother are talented, but it definitely helps and you don't go from complete obscurity to having millions of subs and monthly listeners without a little help behind the scenes. Just like taylor swift, while i find her obnoxious personally, she's a talented writer but would she be as big as she is if daddy hadn't have literally bought her initial label and made them focus on her? Maybe, maybe not? the music industry sucks big shit and there are thousands and thousands of artists that are just as good as what we hear that will never "make it."

Pretty much. Without having some kind of connections, there's little chance she'd have broken into the mainstream. That being said, it still says something about her that she's been able to build and maintain such a high level of popularity. There have been plenty of acts the industry has tried to shove down our throats that went nowhere.

Cant tell you much, but i do know body image is something she’s conscious about, usually seen wearing baggy clothes to award shows or shoots and stuff to hide any hint of a figure. Especially because she was underage when her career blew up, and i think that’s something zoomers can appreciate

honestly it is pretty cool to see a young woman blow up in the music industry and not immediately be sexualized. it's one of the things I actually like about her a lot as an artist even tho I don't really listen to her music

If she hasnt been sexualized it’s entirely because she’s fighting it. But i remember people dragging the “she’s finally 18” crowd on twitter, and :cringe: they are awful.

I have no reason to believe the industry wont keep trying, but respect for her fighting it. She can either embrace it and flaunt it, or obscure it, what matters is she controls it. And i hope they dont try any fuckery to her because of it

yeah thats what i mean. Its dope, good on her. no disrespect to female artists that want to explore sexually provocative art but it's nice to see someone go the other way with it for once.

tbh same. i like her songs, i like her personality. but i dont really see why she's soooo big. i guess thats just the music industry for you though. like i dont get why any other artist is super popular either (looking at drake, kanye, taylor swift). like dont get me wrong they all make good songs but multimillionaire level? nah.

I mean I can kinda see why the others blew up (obviously the industry picks and chooses who they market for one thing), but for Eilish it's just like "...her?"

Yeah. She writes catchy pop songs in her home studio with her brother as a producer. The mumble singing stuff is chill and also still driven. Good pop hooks, she’s also sharp af about how to interactive with the media and music industry.

Basically she has had to deal with a lot of the same shit everyone else does and has still made it out of the grind. She actively gets this shit is a joke and so far has been all in on mocking it.

From what I've heard she doesn't want to be sexualized, the lyrics of her songs tend to be very sexual at times and written by her brother. I always found that combination of facts really creepy. Music is still good tho.

My five year old daughter has loved her since she was like 3. Some of the production is cool and kinda experimental. Almost hits some of the same things as hyperpop does. My kid really loves her videos.
