The cynic in me says that they are getting ahead of the hypocrisy of calling the uyghur situation a genocide while not recognizing what happened in armenia as one

This was absolutely the right thing to do.

It is being done a century too late, and there is no doubt in my mind, for the wrong reasons.

My spicy theory on this, that I completely pulled out of my ass is: Turkey didn't let US warships through the bosphorus. Then, to save face Biden recalled those ships and announced sanctions for Russia instead. Now, as a fuck you to Turkey, Biden is officially acknowledging the Armenian Genocide.

Wasn't the acknowledgement of genocide as a political cudgel something Ilhan Omar got a lot of shit for? Since she voted against the recognition of the Amernian Genocide for that exact same reason.

for 70 years the armenian community in america has been organizing to make this happen at the state and federal level. they've collectively pooled hundreds of millions of dollars on behalf of their lobbies. but in the end none of it mattered, because it took the war department losing control over turkey to finally make it happen.

it's impossible to not be cynical about this because there isn't a lick of integrity to be had in american government anywhere at any level.

This is like someone apologizing to you for lying to the press for years about how you killed his wife and child because you're a drunk driver, but only because they needed a story to distract people from another terrible thing they did.

The U.S. is currently supporting a genocide in Yemen. This is hollow posturing done about a genocide a hundred years ago to frame the U.S as having a leg to stand on when accusing other nations of human rights abuses.

Cheap virtue signalling that doesn't require him to make any material changes.
