Would usher in a terrifying new weapon in the hands of the US government: the control of food. Oops, the rationing computer system crashed in an area that is being defiant and serving the needs of its people ahead of the needs of the government. Technicians are working to fix the problem but warn it could be weeks before the rationing computers are up and running again.

It would be a slippery slope to control it all. Once the infrastructure was in place it could be easily expanded.

"Our software shows you're purchasing more than 24 cans of beer a week. This is unhealthy, and costing all of us in increased healthcare costs. You are being throttled to 6 cans of beer a week, and your account has been debited for a gym membership. Scan the QR code at the entrance of the gym to eventually restore your alcohol access to its former level."

The US would outsource it to some shitty tech start up owned by whoever's cousin happens to be a veteran and is available at the time

That's literally not the case. It's at times like this I like to remember one of my favorite characters of all of film and literature, Inigo Montoya, and his immortal words: "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

Rationing is by far a fairer or more egalitarian solution than taxing goods with a high carbon footprint.

The liberal tax approach which at the moment is the only plan to curb consumption that has any presence in mainstream discourse would place the burden of climate transition on the poor while the ultra rich would be able to eat red meat and do air travel as if nothing happened.

Rationing sucked but the alternative would have been so much worse. It was as much a civil defense policy as air raid shelters were.
