I have no idea who this Destiny mf is but he is giving me some very strong Ben Sharpiro vibes. Just talks really fast with rapid fire bad faith arguments and dragging things down to the lowest common denominator.

It's fun watching Big Dick Wolff get really irritated by this little shit stain lol.

Hey, remember when Destiny literally laughed in Luna Oi's face while saying her country Vietnam deserved to get fucked over by the US because "might makes right"?

Make no mistake. This guy is a straight-up fascist, and proud of it.

Destiny really has an overinflated ego. I still remember his little canvassing moment where he planned on having himself be the main event with a self-important speech centered on political organizing. Something about a full-time Twitch streamer lecturing others on organizing offline makes me chuckle.

I'll never forget the time he tried to prove that being a lawyer was easy by taking a legal practice test and completely bombing it in front of everyone. It was great.

I'm not a pro at google-fu, but I did just try to find a backup and come up short. Every post about it on :reddit-logo: links to the Twitch VOD which has been deleted (though IDK if it was deleted or expired since this was a while ago). Plenty of threads of people talking about it and arguing about why Destiny chose to take it though.

I have a larger than perhaps is rational hatred of Steve, a slovenly worm of a man in his thirties who insists on calling himself “Destiny”. A man whose appearance is that of rancid body odor mixed with Axe body spray personified. Steve represents the insipid impotence of liberal sophistry, and the inevitable repressed fascistic urges that go along with it. A soul so lost, Steve would surely defend the lynching of a man, rather than to give him food so that he may not starve.

The man’s a prick and I hope he dies alone.

        edit: also:

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Destiny_(streamer)

Steven Kenneth Bonnell II, known as Destiny, had a pretty rough life. He is basically a case study in fascism and fits with Reich's thesis pretty well. (Sorry to keep beating this horse.) He had a very religious, petite bourgeois upbringing, and his petite bourgeois life collapsed just as he was entering puberty. The conservative petite bourgeois was proletarianized. All of this must have made his sex life frustrating, to say the least. His weird approach to sex is probably what makes his politics so fucked up. Basically, in his mind, because he is not allowed to enjoy sex, and because all sex must take place in order to serve the established order (women must be babymaking machines so that capital can keep consuming human flesh), the entire world must suffer—all of us have to pull together to support capitalism / Biden / dad. Of course he would deny all of this if you asked him. Any questions about it would enrage him. The process is mostly unconscious.

I mean, Steve has a girlfriend and doesn't have any kids abandoned his son to play video games, but my guess is that he has a lot of weird habits and inner monologues, and feels guilty every time he has sex without getting his girlfriend pregnant. When he runs into socialists, who are clearly in favor of total sexual liberation—meaning that people have a right to enjoy safe sex without necessarily having shitloads of babies—he goes completely nuts.

Steve also managed to use Twitch to escape the proletariat and return to his petite bourgeois status, which means he thinks that the system works. To say that actually, it was his privilege as a white dude in the imperial core which enabled him to escape—and not necessarily any inherent skill—must also drive him out of his mind, since he is a g*mer and spends most of his life in neoliberal / fascist fantasy worlds where individual hard work and intelligence is literally the only factor in success.

I'm looking through wikipedia's sources on Steve's life. This one from Mother Jones is alternately boring / hilarious / appalling:

        https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2020/04/destiny-twitch/

edit: still reading. Steve also has weird issues with going to the bathroom. He streams for like twelve hours a day, doesn't eat, and takes one bathroom break. This reminds me of Jane Meyer writing about how the Koch brothers, as children, were ordered by their literal Nazi nanny to shit at exact times on command and (I believe) beaten if they were unable to comply. Freudians can rejoice, as Steve clearly has weird oral, anal, and phallic fixations. He is, both on the inside and outside, a total shitstorm of a human being who needs a lot of help. Had he never discovered Twitch, he probably would have committed murder-suicide in a mass shooting a long time ago, but thanks to the glories of capitalism, he is a Twitch millionaire we are discussing here on hexbear.

Jesus I didn't know that. Feel sorry for the kid. Genetics is not destiny (lol) so although he's been dealt a shitty card right from the beginning, all we can hope for is that he'll be less of a shitty person than his dad.

It's funny, people in the comment section are complaining that Wolff's points are too well-thought-out and subtle. There only frame of reference is when a video game has a cutscene they want to skip, so they can play as fast as possible and ignore the story.

Yeah. It really seems beneath him. Why should a lifelong academic Marxist economist waste their breath on an edglord gamer? And right off the bat the "moderator" said something along the lines of "both of these people are titans of their respective fields." Like... what is Destiny's field? Filling jugs with piss while he plays League of Legends?

At least Wolff did a good job of explaining shit.

It fell on deaf ears, but fortunately not to all the people watching the video.

The commentary he does at the end (which I watched about 30 seconds of) where he's like "I'm a dumbass that didn't understand anything Wolff said" was a pretty great and totally oblivious self-own tho

You make the assumption the point was to argue with Steve to convince him of other stuff, the target was the audience though. Public debates are never about the person in front of you, but the people in the audience and the people hearing about it via 3rd degree.

Communism is when you stay moral and such and don't talk to an audience of 15k people life and 40k people at a later time.

          As Mao said:

liberalism is talking to impressionable teenagers

We don't want to isolate ourselves inside of an ivory tower, but as far as audiences go, 15k, or even 100k over 10 years is pretty small. You might as well debate Ben Shapiro. You'll get a bigger audience and the retorts will be equally stupid.

The debate culture is shit, but that isn't even my main issue here. It's the mismatch in stature. It would be much cooler to see someone with the pedigree of Richard Wolff dunk on some Brookings Institute clown like Ben Wittes than a powerless, forgettable twitch streamer. The reason the Zizek v. Peterson debate owned is because they were roughly on the same tier and Peterson still got fucking swirlied.

When you have such an imbalance, it's more like the typical Shapiro shtick where he "debates" random college sophomores picked off the street and just talks fast over them and interrupts them. It proves little. Fash vs. Communist debate is stupid, but even on the terms of what debate is supposed to achieve - challenging viewpoints from a critical perspective - it fails to live up to that objective when you pit an expert against a solipsist.

Brookings Institute clown like Ben Wittes

I don't even know the institute nor the person, maybe we ought to try multiple bubbles instead of just the one we know?

it fails to live up to that objective when you pit an expert against a solipsist

The comments and people writing in the chat proof otherwise.

Sure even better would be door to door and company to company organizing, but we aren't there yet. To ignore social media - like twitch - is to ignore material reality (esp. without empirical data analysis) for moral superstitions.

The heroes of the working class aren't academics.
