    proprietary software :stallman-shining:

In all seriousness, can someone tell me what're the best FOSS programs to make stuff like this? I already have them all installed, but I'm only familiar with gimp and blender.

I use OpenShot, which was pretty easy to switch to after I lost access to the free versions of Adobe's stuff.

Another +1 for OpenShot. Kdenlive may also work, but honestly they're pretty crashy in general and proprietary software is the name of the game for video editing - even with excellent backends like ffmpeg. You should be able to use Blender too for video editing but I also feel like that may have been removed in current releases.

Not sure what functionalities OpenShot, Pitivi, and Kdenlive have, but I got the impression they were more for editing footage. Is there specific software for making animated infographic-y stuff or do any of these cover that well enough?

Unfortunately I’m not an AV guy so I can’t say for sure, but maybe hacking around with Blender could work?

Kdenlive I know has the capability to make something like op, I would guess openshot does too, but I haven't used it so I can't say. Blender's video editor is subpar, but it does integrate very well into the rest of blender for 3d effects, and the blender foundation is apparently working on an update to the editor that should come out in the next year or so.

Blender has a functional video editor, and the 3d viewport/2d grease pencils is amazing for doing quick animations.

for whatever reason openshot barely works for me (no hardware accel and sound doesn't export with video) so i use shotcut. it's a more complicated workflow tho

Kdenlive is supposed to be decent. Blender's video editor is getting a makeover over the next year or so. Right now blender's video editor is decidedly mediocre.
