VR sex sucks, don't think it's a much bigger threat than normal porn. the real threat to continued reproduction of the species is the neoliberal privatization of communal spaces and the mediation of all human interaction through megacorp-controlled apps. The advent of Facebook made it harder to smash bits than Ass Inflation Simulator 6000 only on PlayStation VR™

Federated virtual spaces that can't be owned and controlled by corporations would be nice to have if and when VR becomes more mainstream.
The only thing better than sex with the wife? Six and a half beers while fishing!
Funny story, there's a study out there that's showing that VR porn leads to more feelings of intimacy and empathy towards the porn actors making the viewer feel better about themselves compared to people who watch regular porn. So VR Porn, while awesome, is not so much a replacement for sex but almost therapeutic and less toxic. VR has a lot of potential for awesomeness, which is why Facebook being at the helm for much of it is where a lot of the real concern should lie.
Oh, yeah, no doubt. But as I see it, in such an objectifying industry, there's something to be said for a pornographic experience that subconsciously reminds you that there's another feeling human being that was involved in the making of it.

Which is why open-source + federated virtual spaces need to be a thing before corps like Facebook take over completely. VR is quickly becoming cheaper and more accessible, so it's not that far fetched to think that it could become a regular part of most people's lives, much like smart phones.
Totally agree with you, but unfortunately Facebook's Quest 2 doesn't have much in the way of competition at the moment and that's allowing them to grab the all-in-one VR market. Which is unfortunately the future of consumer VR. At some point we're probably gonna have to pull some digital attacks on their servers and whatnot to try and destroy their hold on things.
Some people can live with casual sex and no connections
i am one of those people and i still wouldn't shag a robot
The amount of hardware necessary for anything VR makes it immediately prohibitive.
Secondly, anybody that has ever made the argument that sexdolls or sex robots or whatever will replace sex with another human being have never had an intimate sexual experience. There is no substitute.
counterpoint: relationships and tinder
they arent direct substitutes, but you can convince people to accept second rate knockoffs instead
There may be some people that accept the substitute, but not enough for it to ever reach the norm
If that does happen, it won't be the fault of the technology. Something has to be very wrong with the social fabric for that to happen.
Something that immediately came to mind, Twitch culture. Some young people spend all day on YouTube and Twitch, rather than having friends. I don't think the cause of this is the website but the alienation of late capitalism. It definitely is possible that Blade Runner holograms become commonplace.
Uh, no. If anything, VR allows more intimacy, over distances and in role play. And can also be a great help to our trans comrades who feel dysmorphia during sex.
The solo porn stuff is pretty limited since you can't use good cinematography.
It's gonna be while before artificial sex can really compete with the real thing, so no.
Everyone saying it won't become a problem. I agree, in that VR is hella clunky at the moment, BUT:
People already get addicted to porn to the extent that they don't bother with sex. I go through bouts of it. Just totally lose the desire to have sex, because a hand and an infinite amount of porn at my fingertips is a hell of a lot easier.
ALSO, if VR does ever get super super good, we could be looking at a Ready Player One / 1984 type thing where it distracts us from the shit going down in the world. We already are, except the engaging medium isn't just games, it's more the apps with addictive algorithms that we can scroll through on our phones for hours.
People should stop imagining weird outlandish scenaria to get mad about.
Oh lol I'm not sure what the "proper" plural is in English but I just assumed it is similar to the Greek. I was pronouncing the 'p' in psychology and pterodactyl etc for a long time before I realized for some reason people drop it in English.
I am concerned I will never be able to get the real thing.
Other than that, no, not really. I think humans will still want to do the fucky IRL even if the video game version becomes very "realistic"somehow.
