Thought it would be a relatively simple thing to compile the weeks slop and seed it out. Any reason why it hasn't happened? I didn't think that patreon or stitcher would be more litigous than big media.

There was a lot of talk that podcasting was a medium that's escaped attention in the wake of jan 6th. Useful Idiots pod was kicked off Rolling Stone for their anti-imperialist left positions too, it seems like, and they had a little clout.

Jesus! Ninjas everywhere. Someone else said they were gonna try and host everything more securely too.

If you can do something, :chavez-salute:

and don't do it from a home connection probably

hey, searched the room list but couldn't find it, got the exact name? That person with all the pods seems mostly offline too.

thanks. I searched that but it never came up in the room list. Maybe I was trying to connect when nobody was in the room or something.

Useful Idiots pod was kicked off Rolling Stone

For real? Matt's written for Rolling Stone for ages, which way did they think the podcast would lean? I don't listen to every episode, so I must've missed this.

Exactly. My only knowledge of this is coming from what they've said on the pod tbh, and they've kind of been making a joke about it, which I think they realized was a mistake when nobody noticed that it happened.

They implied that they were kicked out/not rehired because of their criticism and position on Saudi involvement in Yemen, because of Rolling Stone's close connections to SA funding.

They had a rational position on China too which probably won't be allowed in a legacy media outlet like RS.

They're on substack now I think, Mat was on it before, and the pod is no longer with Rolling Stone. Think they fired him from writing for Rolling stone too.

There were big numbers listening to the pod before they were fired afaik.

That's wild, Matt's a known quantity there, surely firing him from a rather successful podcast and from writing in the magazine that most readily comes to mind when you think of him would draw more attention, not less. Fuckin' stupids. Is that why they changed theme songs?

That's the thing, it got zero attention from what I saw. It should have been noticed but I didn't see any other media types making any noise about it. I don't know whether it was fear of legals or media omerta or what.

Hadn't even noticed the theme change tbh.

Damn i didn't know that shanny stopped doing it.

I can take over rehosting a small number of podcasts that i listen to myself:

    • Trashfuture
    • WTYP
    • Boonta Vista (need premium feed)
    • Radio War Nerd (need premium feed)
    • QAnon Anonamous (need premium feed)
    • TrueAnon (need premium feed)

If folks can DM me working patreon feeds for these, I'll try and get them set up by this weekend. The files will be rehosted from my server so it should not get your account into trouble.

Apparently shanny may have got got by dmca so it might be best to host it somewhere unconnected to you.

Also, o7 if you can host some. Need slop more than I realized.

That's a good point, thanks. I'll look into hosting solutions but that will mean extra costs. Will have to look at how my finances work out.

Mostly thinking about some anecdotes I've heard about countries with poor internet coverage where weekly collections of "the internet" are distributed via hard drive. I think you could include stuff like interesting leftist articles that have dropped that week, maybe any interesting videos that come out. Preferably with selective downloads.

Shit that's not a bad idea at all. I remember hearing about offline internet efforts for countries without internet access years ago. A curated (lol) torrent of the week's best left articles, pods and videos would be brilliant.

You're right about the selective downloads - all torrent clients can do that now afaik - been doing it with torrents for years.

This is an alt, so I'll post somewhere if I get something like that going. You think people would perfer a compressed file or an uncompressed one? Maybe just compression for the vids.

I'd say uncompressed - so that you can choose which files you're gonna download this week.

Although if seeding is an issue some torrents are compressed to one file, to stop people just downloading the popular files and not seeeding the popular files in the torrent.

It depends on the total size of the torrent I guess.

Yeah same, have seen them on reddit but they're usually temporary. A couple of heroes here said they will try and centralize something.

A weekly torrent with the mp3s seems very doable and distributed. Shit, after all these years and all those torrents I've never actually created a torrent.

hmm, convenience is fine but something is not working if feeds are going down and we're spending all this energy looking for mp3 files.

Comic people have a secure distributed system, in place for decades, where you can look at a weekly torrent and choose what files you want that week. Done in seconds.

People here are spending time tracking down mp3 files of episodes ffs. The replication of labour is insane.
