"We oppose US-backed war crimes and the continuing apartheid, including the ongoing bombing in Gaza and evictions in Jerusalem and the West Bank."
I haven't heard Toady speak politically before so that's unexpected.

Based shit. Gotta sit down and try this game out some day.
There are video games and then there's Dwarf Fortress. It uses the most vivid world simulation possible to give you that sense of endless wonder that Minecraft did. Only instead of saying "Here's this world, what will you build?" it asks "what's the worst thing you could build?"
Turns out I can always build something worse. I can chain leprechauns to the floor and maul them with dogs in my child dormitory so the kids get a safe exposure to death and are trauma-hardened soldiers by age 12. Mere video games don't let you do that.

I still remember watching a video a while back where he talked about the game and mentioned how he added eyelids into the game so dwarves weren't literally washing their eyeballs, or how he had to fix an issue that was causing cats to die in taverns from alcohol poisoning. It's crazy how much there is in that game; I've never played it but I've always wanted to (and yes, I am indeed waiting for the steam release so I can have a relatively easier to use UI).
That level of detail and interactions between details is what really makes the game brilliant. The world feels genuinely alive and you can never tell where the danger will ultimately come from or what it will entail.
For anyone unaware: dwarves sometimes get into drunk fights in taverns, spilling booze on the floor. Cats would walk over the alcohol and then lick their feet to clean themselves... then they'd get drunk, start puking uncontrollably and die.
Here's the bug report
One little detail I love about that game is that if someone masters a combat skill, they automatically become an alcoholic.
The implication of course being anyone who has seen enough combat to be a master at it has seen some shit and needs alcohol to cope.
while the free version is great there is a steam version pending that should have some rimworld-esque graphics and an actual UI. the free version was too much like playing a game on the scan gun i use at work (as in ancient, pre-DOS mess). i love it to death though.
I enjoy ascii graphics, I play roguelikes a lot.
i grew up on them but DF is something...different. the UI is really, really weird. it changes keys for basic functions in nearly every menu. once you memorize it, however, it's great and i'm sure you would enjoy it. it's not even the graphics i'm waiting for but the UI overhaul.
