Sara June, one of the founders, was the person who uploaded the original video, and so already had the channel, although the song and the animation were created independently by others. I don't know if they actually made much money off of it, but presumably it did provide a boost in initial engagement.
I thought they were the creators of Nyan Cat and that's how they acquired the capital to start MeansTV?
