it's a movie about the UK's longest-serving prisoner, Charles Bronson. it's very individual-focused but is honest at times that prison is an awful place. idk what does everyone else think
It's a good flick, strong Tom Hardy performance. While it does show how shitty British jails were, given the structure of the movie (a biopic), rather than a systemic criticism of the prison system, a better tack would be the use of solitary confinement. He went through a LOT of solitary confinement, which didn't help his already fragile psyche.
He's such an outlier in terms of his willingness and ability to engage in physical violence that it's hard to use him as the basis for a systemic critique.
I haven't thought of that movie in forever. My only thoughts are I like Refn, even if he's his films are pretentious af, and I seem to remember Bronson stripping before fighting guards in prison. That did happen right? I watched this very late at night
not only did that happen, he made one of the guards lotion him with butter before his big naked fight.
also fun fact: the british public were outraged when it was discovered that the prison was supplied with brand-name lurpak butter, meaning charles' asscheeks were covered in higher quality butter than most ppl put on their toast
edit: or at least i THINK i remember that, saw it on a newspaper so theres 50% chance its true
I watched it bc I really like refn, but it’s probably my least favorite of his
Drive (an all time fav of mine), the place beyond the pines, Valhalla rising and the neon demon are his other English films. I haven’t seen his danish ones
