Because American foreign policy is weird in that it's something like 95% of Americans don't understand, don't care to understand, and don't vote based on it. However, despite this if you go against the propaganda and challenge this notion that US foreign policy has generally been righteous, then 95% of Americans will get really angry at you. And the media will go into attack mode on you. So for any politician, going against the grain and speaking out against empire gets you a whole lot of bad will with no payoff.
