I thought it was pretty funny. It's like how much more right wing can the Dems get? And then they keep doing stuff like this.

Now I'm trying to remember if any Dems proposed abolishing the draft back in like 2004 or 06.

Not that I could see, but I found this lmao.

          Highlights:

The report found the Selective Service System wouldn’t be able to deliver the Pentagon the first inductees within the required 193 days. Also, the system estimated that it would need $465 million to perform a draft.

The system’s budget now is about $23 million annually.

How we still have a draft on the books is a perfect example of the sclerotic, political inertia that dominates the thinking in DC. No one actually wants it. We'll never see a draft again outside of an alien invasion or something. P sure even the military has said they don't want it or need it. But yet it's still there and no one even talks about getting rid of it.

And IMO it exists because both parties are afraid of looking "weak" and giving ammo to the other party so they can accuse them of being "unpatriotic". It's like how Trump putting Cuba on the state sponsors of terror list was genius (evil, but also genius). Everyone knew it was complete bullshit but because the Dems are so afraid of the meany GOP calling them unpatriotic they're just gonna leave it there forever.

The contradicts in a decaying empire are fascinating.

i know its lib shit to care about the constitution at all, but i love how they somehow determined that the draft isnt involuntary servitude, and so its an exception to the 13th amendment

Ground war with China maybe? As unlikely as that is.

If it was a ground war IN China or the US, no. I could maybe imagine some proxy war blowing up with another venue being the battleground. Like, IDK imagine if the left has more victories in Latin America and China starts pumping money into the continent and so the US responds by coming up with some excuse to invade this new Socialist Bloc to the south of them, and China sends troops in for support. The fact neither country is on each others turf may prevent a nuclear options but after a few years of fighting guerillas in the Andes armed with QBZ-191 another draft may seem necessary.

      No one actually wants it.

As the pool of military recruits becomes more and more rarified, and the cost of getting enlistees through the door keeps sucking money out of a budget that could be going to Cool New Toys, the appeal of a draft is growing.

We're creeping towards that Heinlein fantasy of Citizenship Demands Service.

Taking a break from the irony to have a hot take that people who are drafted into a military (I.e. aren’t rich enough to get out of it) aren’t war criminals and are probably expiremwnted on

I would just make a stand for my principles and tell them that if they want to draft me, they'll have to take me to jail or fucking shoot me to make me join the military. That's the bottom line.

I mean it's certainly something that should be considered in their favor but plenty of Americans chose to go to jail or Canada (same thing really) over murdering Vietnamese people.

Draft is actually very useful, because it will radicalise a lot of people and provide them with military training.

Is it better for the purposes of organizing a working class movement to be up against a state with a professional military or a conscripted military? Don't know the answer. Wondering if anyone's written about it

Lots of communists were drafted into the imperial army as punishment and they were organizing troops on the front line to the point that the tsar knew he could not count on the military for help if there was a revolution. That's really important to remember. I doubt the US military would do that today (you'll just get jail time or disappeared). Either way, you will need the military on your side or its over before it starts.

This isn't a shift to compulsory service like South Korea or Finland has. It's a draft, and it won't be activated unless we're in a WW3-tier conflict. If that occurs, nukes will likely come out, and there won't exactly be many people left after that.
