Lol the first part isnt even true, Xi has been continuing the policy of easing the process of getting tourist visas, especially for countries with large Chinese diaspora populations like Canada or Australia. Like you can easily get a ten year visa in Canada that let's you freely fly in and stay for up to 90 days.

If you think the CPC is hostile to foreign visitors that's becuase you've been consuming to much American propaganda.

Damn, you Anglos must have weak/spoiled immune systems. I have been using tap water to clean my teeth since I arrived to China, and I never encountered a problem. I have also never really been seriously sick; the last time I got fever, it went away the next day. You guys must live in bubbles or something, China is normal imo.

same. many of my fellow mayos here also whinge about eating local food and what it does to their stomachs. i guess it's similar to how mayo-americans always "joke" about how mexican food gives them diarrhea.

I like spicier food (not as spicy as some people like though I am still a babby but still more spicy than fucking taco hell) and I am a weak weilled nonbinary loser with ibs and it doesn't make me splode and these nerds think of themselves as BIG MANLY MEN? Pfffttt pathetic

Anyone else feel like the way Americans talk about water in other countries can be some low key chauvinism, like looking down their nose at that country.

Americans always go on and on about that shit. If I say “yea went to Mexico for a few days.” Someone will come running and throw themself into the room and go “lmao hope you didn’t drink the water!”

Idk like it’s a thing I know but I feel like undue attention is always brought to it. We’re probably gonna need to be boiling our shit too inside of 10 years anyway the way infrastructure is going lol

Also, it's not even like the microbiota in a lot of the countries they say this about are "worse" at all, it's just that they're different and your body is not used to them. Like, people that are there drink the water and they're fine. Just like, drink a tiny bit of it at a time if you're gonna be around for a while, and in a few weeks you'll have no problems with the tap water just like everyone else.

Idk if it's all chauvinism. I traveled abroad and had some tainted water and I had hardcore diarrhea for 2 weeks and lost 20lbs. It's a real problem.

For sure it’s a problem. I definitely don’t think it’s all bad, it’s def an issue and it’s sometimes just good advice. I guess I’ve just had a lot of convos with reactionary Texans that use it as an excuse to point out something “inferior” about Latin America to feed their unearned nationalist ego, so I probably have a skewed perspective.

But definitely I’ve been to countries where we used bottled water for pretty much everything and locals cautioned us

Also sorry you had to go through that comrade sounds rough af. Glad you recovered well

Oh I can agree that using it as an excuse to consider some countries lesser is straight up garbage. Your experience with reactionaries sounds infuriating so I can see where you're coming from.

While I was in XXX I had locals advise me not even to trust the bottled water and to only stick with beer since it's been guaranteed to be boiled lol.

Although in all honesty I don't think I ever fully recovered and it was years ago. I've had a lot of dietary issues ever since I got back that have never gone away. Like, food allergies that only came about directly afterwards. It's nuts.

Is it actually likely to get a stomach bug from rinsing and spitting water? You are supposed to boil the tap water out there, but seems like it's just as likely you'd get sick just from the innate exposure to a lot of bugs travelling internationally.

Edit: also they get water in their mouth while showering? Are they just like a turkey who drowns standing up in the rain?

I never got sick from brushing my teeth with the tap water but I suppose it might depend on where you are. Some places have worse water than others.

Also, boiling the tap water is not necessarily good either because boiling doesn't get rid of heavy metals. Again, depends on where you are.

I get a letter every month with my water bill that tells me not to use my water for anything.

Geee, I wonder if there's something that Western nations have been doing in the last few years to make Chinese people less welcoming of Westerners?

    No, it must be Xi.
