It's basically what stops you from turning your brain into mush and turning into a zombie if you're a chronic alcoholic. It's stored in your liver and you drain it when you drink too much.
Oats and whole grains, beef, and fish. Black beans as well. If you drink more than your average person eat a lot of one, or all, of these as a habit. I think pork has some too, a low amount, but chicken definitely does not.
It should be an additive to beers but no one has allowed that to happen yet. Look up Wernicke–Korsakoff syndrome if you're wondering what the consequences of not having enough are.
last post of the night. Eat your Thiamin.
edit: it's also called B1
editedit: supplements work too
Us alcoholics got vitamin b shots in the ass in rehab and I was also taking supplements along with phenobarbital.
It helped a lot, I was feeling pretty good after all the shots and supplements.
I'm just trying to eat right since rehab probably isn't going to happen where I'm at lol. But, yeah, a lot of the worst long term parts are just us fucking draining obscure resources from our body
I should really get my mom to start taking her supplements seriously since she's an alcoholic. Thanks for this post, it's a good reminder.
Yeah I've been dealing with some shitty feelings from it and making sure my nutrients are right has really fucking perked me up.
Coincidentally black beans are another great source of Thiamin I forgot to add to the OP. Could be why the hobos of old handled their shit so well.
porridge 'n' beans baby throw a handful of spinach in there and you're goin
really cut down my drinking this year, fuck me that was HARD after the year of hell I've had, but yeah I still keep that B1 high. good post comrade 👍
Alcohol is just terrible for your liver. Honestly I don't understand how people make it years or decades of hard drinking. I suppose it's because your liver doesn't hurt when it's damaged. Otherwise people would be screaming after a night out getting drunk. It's definitely still damaged, though.
Really though it's a genetic and psychological thing. Alcohol hits some of us in a very difficult to describe way. Most of us aren't like WHOO WE JUST LOVE TO PARTAYYY it's more of a feeling of need, and a loss of when sober, that doesn't even go away in longer-term abstinence.
This post is harm reduction, not apologia and pretending like it's good.
The funny thing is if you're trying to stop drinking you need something better than alcohol and alcohol is pretty good. So you better find something a lot better. You want to figure out something that you're doing with your life that's worth not getting drunk and screwing up.
Because you want to have something on the other side of that teeter-totter that has some value. So that you can think no no I'm not going to get drunk and screw that up. You might say well why do people drink too much? If you like alcohol that's a stupid question. It's like why do people drink too much, well because it's great. You need something better than that.
You need an adventure, you need to get out there and have something to do and and something worth waking up for. That's the substitute for the addiction. (Actually the addiction is the substitute for that if truth be known.) Eventually you can flip that around and you can find there's a lot of weight in having self-worth.
like why do people drink too much, well because it’s great.
I'm going to keep responding because I could make a whole post about this thing you've said.
No that's not why people keep drinking. They keep drinking because they find themselves in the throes of addiction. It's specifically not great. Addiction is not a nebulous concept. It is a physical problem in our brains that is not so easy to get out of as "having an adventure". I've had adventures my friend, I still got drunk.
oh oh i'm sorry i've finally been awakened by the benal tripe that you've typed here. I'm going to go around the world in a blimp or whatever and eat only kellogs corn flakes for the rest of my life
My dude, you don't know who you're talking to or what you're talking about but you feel really good giving advice to me when I'm just suggesting some fucking vitamins so people can feel better.
Stay out of this lane. you don't know what you're talking about and it comes across as either manipulative or incredibly condescending. Get out of here, please.
Actually the addiction is the substitute for that if truth be known
L O L
This probably would've been good to know ten or fifteen years ago.
It's never a bad time to start taking care of yourself. I met an old fat guy in the gym the other day who said he already had artificial parts in his heart and all kinds of medical issues. If he can get out there and start working to improve things a bit, so can you. :anarchy-heart:
Well I am no longer drinking two handles of whiskey a week so that's a start!
Yeah I take 1g B1 a day. High doses can't hurt you so don't be afraid of taking a lotm. 500mg is recommended for alcoholics.
tbh kinda sounds like magic supplement bullshit heavy drinking is just generally not good for you
It's not curing alcoholism it's just an easy to overlook nutrient deficiency. Look it up, it's been recommended since the 30's to stop your brain from rotting. Like doctors prescribe it to people who can't quit even now. It's not going to fix your liver. Obviously alcoholism will kill you. This is a harm reduction post.
oh alright I thought it waas meant as some cure-all. yes drink safely harm reduction is good.
no, absolutely not. drinking heavily is bad. If you can't stop though, alcoholism, make sure your nutrients are in order to curb some of the worst effects. This is one of them people often overlook to really bad results.
Wernicke–Korsakoff syndrome
It's in the OP btw if you want to know what I'm talking about. It's basically scurvy but for alcoholics.
