America invaded Afghanistan for human rights. China is working with the Afghan government because they want to build a pipeline to nowhere near their population centers and give more leverage to Xinjiang province. I am very smart.

Even if they wanted to demonstrate a material foundation for china's involvement beyond the social stability of a volatile neighbor, they could have shown Afghanistan's mineral resources instead. This is just bonkers, they already have a pipeline through Pakistan to Iran and are in the process of building one though Tajikistan and Turkmenistan iirc.

are you talking about the Gwadar-Kashgar pipeline? because that's still under construction

I can't tell, they appear to have broken ground in 2017 but it looks like a huge project with a budget more than $10 billion and a lot of logistical challenges like -30 C temps requiring heating of the pipeline

but I guess it's worth it to China not to rely on the Strait of Malacca

Yeah iirc something like 90% of China's oil comes thru there. Getting that pipeline done will be a massive geopolitical victory for china

Famously flat, easy to traverse, easy to control, oil rich stretch of 1000 miles between the most sparsely populated regions of China and Iran which… oh wait actually has very little oil on it (about 10.5x less oil than China itself) and is somehow as far as possible from both Iran and Afghanistan’s oil producing regions.

They really just make China sound cool, like what? They have no need to care about profit margins to construct large and complicated infrastructure? I wish that were my country.

I wonder how many such pipelines could've been built over 20 years and how many billions of dollars.

God, I can't imagine living in a place with an unlimited opaque "security" budget. Must be hellish

Chine already built a pipeline to Pakistan no? Also that perfectly solves their main oil problem which is just getting oil into the country without having to use the straight of Malacca. No need for one through Afghanistan

Thus, by a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak.

I have no opinion one way or the other on what China's stance is with Afghanistan and will sit back and listen, LONG LIVE THE CCP LONG LIVE CHAIRMAN XI!
